http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqIHKWd9rSc

For thousands of years they spread slavery...they lied to the people and told them they were civilizing them
To this day they spread slavery....to this day they lie to the people

I read that book and despite being very sympathetic to the basic message, I hated it. No evidence, no details whatsoever. Just vague reminiscences with nothing specific enough to be checked. An insult to intelligence.

Re: John Perkins author of "Confessions of an Economic Hitman"

I read both "Hitman" and "Secrets" and while I agree that there isn't much in the way of evidence or details, it does set a context that doesn't necessarily occur to people who have never worked for or experienced corporate America. Not that I believe everything he wrote, but I can imagine there's is quite a bit of truth to the way internation corporate deals go down.

I equate the whole IMF, USAID, World Bank, CIA, Multi-National Corporation bogeyman in some ways to Dana Carvey's skit about framing OJ. It just can't be everybody. People don't seem to be that reliable imo (tho I could be wrong).

Still, good stories if you like that kind of thing.

On what, corporate dominance? There are zillions.

Naomi Klein, The Shock Doctrine on the use of crisis to bludgeon countries/people into compliance with corporate demands.

Matt Taibbi, Griftopia on the corporate predation leading to the 2008 collapse.

Stephen Kinzer, Bitter Fruit: The Story of the American Coup in Guatemala.

Ralph Nader, The Big Boys, -- profiles of corporate barons.

read em. wouldn't say they were better. there is a certain "characterization" in "empire" more than "hitman" that really sticks to some degree imo. for instance, after reading "Griftopia" I wanted to break the windows out of the neighborhood banks, and you need a big glass of water for every Nader book. idk maybe it's the shaman stuff, but it wasn't just a list of what's wrong. it also suggests things to do about them that people can take part in whether they have any actual power or not.

Agree on both counts. I don't really doubt the validity/veracity of what Perkins says (given the other work that's been done on that front), but the book is incredibly poorly sourced. But then again, it's a first-person account.

I'd also add to this the recent works of Chalmers Johnson and Andrew Bacevich.

Of course, the "corporate dominance" this Perkins character talks about is backed by armies and CIA operations ("the jackals" as he calls them) who move in for the kill if the politicians don't go along with the plan.

Maybe I nit but "corporate dominance" seems like a pretty obscure way to describe this topic. More like "brute aggression" imo.
