Because it's extremely uncomfortable to bring it up and be seen as insinuating there might be a problem. It's like the great aunt who got into a car accident, lost her husband and wound up with a MASSIVE drinking problem. Years later the wounds have healed but she still has a drinking problem and nobody wants to be "that guy" that points it out. The family is just waiting for her to realize it and seek some help or take some responsibility for it and then maybe there can be a group effort to fix it. If someone DOES say something the aunt throws a fit and starts screaming about how she lost her husband and her life sucks and blah blah blah and the sympathetic cousins take her side and suddenly that guy has half a dozen people screaming at him. Except that the accident happened a long time ago and at some point you have to move on, as much as it sucked.

The paper (or any media outlet) doesn't want to point out the problem because they don't want to deal with the enormous backlash from the community for being "insensitive".
