The high birth rate, of 8-10 children per couple, is among the religious. Out-immigrating and out-breeding the secular is their thing. Israel is unusual in that many of its citizens do not recognise its legitimacy as a state, and are strongly opposed to it (despite living under its army's protection and indeed living on child benefit paid by its government), because it is secular.

Demographically -- and politically, because the Dati Leumi will throw in their lot with the Haredi for the promise of power -- the existing secular State of Israel is quite likely to be swept away in the fairly near term and replaced by a theocracy. With nuclear weapons. That'll be interesting.

Haredi are a minority but a united minority can be very powerful politically.

I'm familiar with that startling photo -- and that's just the menfolk -- and it shows their coherence and obedience. And they're just as coherent and obedient when it comes to marriage and children, so their voting numbers will probably quadruple in twenty years.

At present Dati Leumi and Haredi are fairly estranged (mainly because Haredi don't want to serve in the IDF), but they have one great thing in common, which is that they don't like the secular left. The hostile language that both Dati Leumi and Haredi use about seculars is pretty depressing. And the simple arithmetic of family size means that secularism is on the way out.

This is the problem many people (like myself) have with Israel. Israel politicians call their country a "beacon of light" in the middle east, the only true democracy. But it's an apartheid like state or occupation whichever way you want to look at it. My country the good ole' USA, did similar things to indigenous people in the 19th century, not to mention segregation of races. Of course there was South Africa in the late 20th century, and now Israel in the 21st. A lot of Israel defenders ITT take any criticism of Israel as anti-Semitic.
