Is this party for the collective Texas delegation or is it just Texas republicans? I don't really understand how these things work.

Boro-

get really drunk, start yelling about Obama being a jackbooted thug. Once someone starts paying attention to you, grab a cocktail napkin, write "Obomba" on the napkin, and keep asking the person "do ya get it?" Once they're sufficiently annoyed, have Borowife get in a crouching position behind the person, and execute the dreaded Boro-top.

Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer and his wife, Connie, both gave $50,000. So did Microsoft chairman and co-founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda.

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and his wife, Marilyn, both gave $50,000. Filmmaker and DreamWorks co-founder Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate, both also gave $50,000. And DreamWorks employees gave a total of $275,000.

Billionaire investor George Soros and his family contributed $250,000 to the inauguration, and Google co-founder Larry Page and CEO Eric Schmidt each donated $25,000.

Other big-name donors who gave $50,000 include filmmaker George Lucas, artist Dale Chihuly, Los Angeles Dodgers President Jamie McCourt. Citigroup managing director Raymond J. McGuire; Oracle President Charles E. Phillips Jr.; actresses Halle Berry and Sharon Stone; and Melvin Simon, co-founder of Simon Property Group, the largest mall owner in the United States.
Good to see people are donating money to its highest valued use. I suppose Gates thought, "Well I've already solved every other problem in the world, I guess making Obama's inauguration even more lavish is now the most efficient charity available."

Or maybe they thought that they can do whatever they want with their own money.

yeah, it's not like the money is coming from their respective charity foundations - it's their own money they use for stuff like groceries and hosting monkey knife fights in international waters

Re: Inauguration Sweat Thread - including BONUS "what will he say" contest!!!

Given that's it "charity", however, it's different from personal consumption since it's others who benefit (mainly). I just wonder whether Gates' personal philosophy would find it consistent if he was presented with an equivalent analogy. I can understand one of a trade-off between maximising your own welfare and maximising that of others - in which case it might be consistent to treat yourself to some extent even though others would benefit more, because you're selfish to some degree. However, in the case of random strangers I don't know why Gates would prefer to help some presumably fairly well-off American strangers with luxuries than another group of strangers who would need the money more.

But he's not "spending his own money", he's donating it and will personally benefit little outside of the psychic benefits. It's entirely plausible that he perhaps does gain a lot of utility out of donating to somewhat questionable causes, but I have a hunch (nothing more) that Gates has fallen somewhat to a "charity diversity" fallacy and that if it was broken down for him as to the exact consequences he might change his mind.
