Before stating my opinion on almost anything, I examine my own biases. I ask myself if I came up with the conclusion first, and then searched for evidence. I asked myself if it were not for this particular example, would I have easily found another one that would tell me the same thing. I ask myself what I would say if I would give the benefit of the doubt or not to someone who I liked better or worse. If you hate all politicians, you don't have to compare to a political adversary, you could compare to someone who you do respect.
This prevented me from picking on Palin, of all people. It prevented me from jumping on McCain's "fundamentals of the economy are sound" phrase, because this was a throwaway phrase that had been used by everyone, everywhere for the two months prior in tribute to Joe-Sixpack, and not in reference to the economy.
It frustrates me how few people choose to engage in this process.
