But that's clearly not how those words are intended in that definition. Unless you consider the word "the" to be profane as well.

Considering that there are religious traditions that do consider certain words holy, some certainly would consider 'the' to be profane.

But one doesn't have to be religious to think that considering that profound and profane are antonyms and since some words do have more semantic depth than others, 'the' can certainly be considered profane.

And while perhaps profane has lost the meaning of 'common'— vulgar is still used that way quite a bit.

How would banning these bracelets teach girls to be ashamed of their bodies?

Because the word boobies is then stigmatized

*Stigmatization of the word boobies then leads to stigmatization of the boobies themselves, and then to the rest of their bodies by analogy.

Pretty sure there's a bunch of banned words at school that are not stigmatized, sexual words, for example.

Examples?

I'm sure words like vulva and labia would be completely appropriate in the right contexts and are probably used in sex ed. classes. (maybe?!)

**And I should add that even if those words that are acceptable in scientific contexts are banned in schools, it could still be seen as stigmatizing of sex.

What I'm trying to argue is that being banned from school does not stigmatize it and that stigmatization is generally only effective when it's in social contexts as well, and that school censorship of words these days generally doesn't do much to curb the use of the words.

Should a young girl be allowed to wear shirt at school that just says 'boobies'.

Well, its been a while since I've taken a social psych. class so I'm not prepared to argue this too much further and the topic of sex attitudes is definitely complex. But children spend a large percentage of their time in schools and I think it would be naive to assume that even if banned words are used outside of school, that the attitudes of teachers and administrators doesn't rub off on children in some way. Perhaps in a way that makes people more obsessed about sex than they would be otherwise.

Should she be allowed to wear a shirt that says "mammary glands"?

(this would actually be a great way to de-stigmatize breasts)

but topless beaches would be better

Is she wearing it for breast cancer awareness or as a sexual shirt? Do you see where I'm going here?

I'm mainly speaking about high schools here, and obviously the fact that the words are taboo raises their popularity but it's not the only thing.

And this all renders the word "profane" meaningless, especially when being used as an argument for why something should not be used in a certain setting.

I propose an awareness campaign for the health benefits of eating chicken called "I Love The C**k".
