Health and Politicness derail - Bonus Food Desert DLC Health and Politicness derail - Bonus Food Desert DLC

I have said it in many threads and people just poobah it away way too much.

It's expensive to eat healthy.

I'll add now that many healthy habits are expensive to develop.

Gym, especially if you go to nice ones that can help with motivation, is expensive. Classes even more so.

Fitbit costs money.

Hell, even clothes for gym cost money.

It's easy for people to make the argument "But there is this thing you can do for free." That argument totally ignores that it's a lot easier for people to do things they find interesting/fun/engaging. Do I want to pay $200+ a month for Crossfit? God no. But the program (or just the coaches at my gym) works for me and it has dramatically improved my fitness level in the past 5 or 6 years.

Oh dear, don't let Health & Fitness know you do crossfit.

Pooh-pooh

And you're right. People scoff at eating at fast food being cheap, but as someone who is poor and cheap and eats at fast food a lot I can tell you that you can eat very cheap and a lot/probably most people do order either off the dollar menu or whatever 2 for $5 deals they have going wherever it is.

But, imho, the biggest cause of being overweight and it's highly correlated with being poor, and especially with being resigned to always being poor, ie being hopeless, is depression. If you don't expect good things in the future it's easy to just say "f*** it".

What if the good things you expect in the future are mostly food and alcohol? :P

The idea of crossfit is good but sweet Jesus it seems like a lot of crossfitters believe terrible form is key to working out. It's like it's a system designed to slowly destroy backs.

the idea of crossfit is not good. Ludicrous and pointless overtraining is baked into the culture

Crossfit is a cult

Yeah, people are so tired from servicing capitalism all week making huge bank for the ownership class that they don't have the energy to maintain the willpower needed to not do the easy thing (takeaway and netflix). If the top 0.1% took a haircut and we had that fabled ") hour work week most people would be a lot more healthy.

Yeah I have a lot of issues with crossfit too. I just like to bag on Heath & Fitness "one way is the only way" whenever I get a chance.

I do a circuit training thing that I characterize as crossfit-intensity but w/o all the crazy potentially injurious moves - which of course Health and Fitness thinks is stupid too.

Basically we all need to be normal body type 28-year-old who just needs to lift some weights and drink a little less beer to get in shape. Anything else and you're doing it wrong.

Crossfit and health/obesity are not relevant topics for this thread. Please take this conversation to a different thread if you guys want to continue discussing it. Thanks.

This is commonly said but total bull****; fruits and vegetables are the cheapest things to buy in grocery stores. Walking around is something almost everyone can do. (though not in all areas of this country obviously) You don't need to work out a lot people just gotta stop eating so much especially crap. Only various athletes need to eat three giant meals a day.

ofc for most people eating healthy is iceberg lettuce layered in salad dressing, croutons and things like gummi fruits and other total garbage things where they were better off just wolfing down oreos.

"You don't need calories" is ripe for the rainbow treatment.

It's not just fast food, it's eating frozen pizzas or PBJs because you never learned how to cook. Convenience food is cheap, fast and full of salt and fats so it tastes better than taking a half hour to prep and cook a meal. Do they even teach home-ec anymore?

Imagine the farts if people lived on broccoli as a staple.

Not a cheap hobby though - I use a half tank of gas getting there and back.
Walking uphill is great, one of the benefits of living in Boulder was being able to do that on the way to work. If you want to add to it get a pack and start carrying weight uphill, if you use gallons of water you can dump it out if you bonk.

I almost never go in the middle of the grocery store - just loop around the outside to meats, fruit, dairy, veggies. Someone has to be eating all that processed, canned and frozen crap.

Making tasty meals out of the healthy stuff that don't take all day to make is a real challenge. I need a Johnny Drama around as my personal chef.

Right now I'm doing the ski-hut trail on Mt. Baldy. It's 4k' gain over 4.5 miles - which is more than enough for my fat ass. Once I get to where I can do it w/o resting then I'll maybe think about adding more weight. But I have to be careful as I think I damaged my foot with too much hiking before my big road trip.

Pushing 50 sucks.

Absolutely. Poor people aren't buying a $3 bag of spinach with 40 calories total on their minimum wage job.

Also, food deserts, education, time to prepare, etc.

I read something recently that poor people indulge in fast food because it's literally the only luxury they can afford. Can't afford Disneyland, but at least we can bring home pizza and ice cream or say "we're going to McDonalds" to put a smile on the kids' faces.

Yeah, wait till you're pulling it. I'm struggling w' 1.8k climbing in 2 miles after sitting down for a few too many months... Have you thought about getting some poles? They help with stability a lot and you hardly look any older with them...
09-06-2018 , 01:40 PM
I tried them but I seem to clang on my foot harder with them vs. w/o - which is counterintuitive I know. W/o the poles I seem to force myself to glide going down - instead of lumber and lurch. Maybe I'm not doing it right.

And for going up - when I hike alone my goal is to train. I want to save the poles to get an extra boost when I am with a group and don't want to slow them down.
09-06-2018 , 01:44 PM
I used them when I first started hiking because I didn't trust my balance, I stopped using them I got tired of carrying them, good to have in the snow but I trust micro spikes more.
