It would have made getting 50 rounds out much tougher. Here's my proposal:
No semi automatic weapons
No magazine sizes over 10 rounds
No pistol grip shotguns

The chances of this particular shooting occurring, as well as other like them, aren't likely reduced by much if assault rifles were banned. If guns as a whole or specific guns in general became more difficult to obtain, it wouldn't be tough to win a debate that gun deaths would drop.

As someone who owns and will continue to own and shoot guns, I will concede that there are more *******s out there than I previously thought doting their prized possessions when they shouldn't have the capability to do so.

I didn't say only once. My understanding that he was not convicted of a criminal offense, felony. I wasn't aware of the contractor issue admittedly. I think you are wrong though about him not being able to pass a background check.
