Yeah that seems a lot faster than usual. This cop must be stone cold guilty. The cynical side of me wonders how much the kid actually being an angel helped.

There is no way it doesn't help a ton. I wonder what kind of background check the department's lawyers do? The kid probably never had a questionable picture taken of himself or a ghetto tweet in his life.

Well according to that article the cops arrested the other kids and impounded their car. Imagine if the kids had just a joint in the car. Well obviously they were driving out aggressively because they knew they'd go to jail for being drug abusers. Probably stoned out of their minds and freaking out. NO ANGELS.

Surprised the cops didn't have a throw down gun to plant.

Maybe Slater is hoping for a Trump pardon.

I wonder if this body cam footage will be released. It has to be especially egregious for them to charge the cop so quick. And it was with an AR-15 like jeez. Nothing I've read explains why the cop would even have his AR out.
05-06-2017 , 03:33 PM
Well, ever since we started giving random beat cops military grade firepower, why wouldn't they use it?

Has the Trump admin started working on renewing that program? I'm sure it's one of the reasons law enforcement was in the bag for him.

i believe they were telling him to put his hands in the air at one point and then get on the ground at another. he was on PCP at the time of the incident. the damning thing for Shelby should have been that there were something like 5 or 6 officers there and another one used his taser right before she shot him. so clearly other officers thought he could be subdued with non deadly force.

However she was probably overcharged for what happened. The state charged her with manslaughter 1 which is "heat of passion" in oklahoma. The more appropriate charge would have been manslaughter 2 "negligence".

You can impeach Trump but it won't stop white juries from using jury nullification to endorse terrorism by cops against black kids.
05-17-2017 , 11:32 PM
This cop wasn't even charged with murder. This is jury nullification by the white majority and this is legal terrorism.

Officer who shot and killed Philando Castile acquitted of all charges (charges appear to have been second-degree manslaughter and endangering safety by discharging a firearm)
06-16-2017 , 04:51 PM
Meanwhile the 20 year old who sent texts to her boyfriend encouraging him to kill himself was found guilty of manslaughter.
06-16-2017 , 04:54 PM
Incredible.

He had a concealed carry permit and told the officer he had a weapon. NRA will be joining in the protests right? Right?!

Involuntary manslaughter, because apparently texting someone to climb back into a truck and die is something you can accidentally do.

Didn't think he would get off. Not even remotely surprised he did though. Absolutely terrible.

This was really interesting. Can't imagine this is going to be upheld on appeal. Not to get all legal analysis itt, but lots of caselaw pointing to complete opposite outcome here. Judge seemed to just play cowboy and wanted to make a stand here.

Bad day all around

I don't think so. The judge said that the messages where the girl was saying ysscky would not have been manslaughter. But then homey starts to kill himself, texts the girl, then gets out of the car and texts her he's getting out of the car and she replies "get back in"

The judge said that "Instructing Mr. Roy to get back in the truck constituted wanton and reckless conduct, creating a situation where there’s a high degree of likelihood that substantial harm would result"

Which sounds about right.

On the one hand she belongs in jail, on the other hand, seems like a dangerous precedent.

Edit: Although when I think about it, you're right, the direct instruction to kill himself seems like a pretty bright line, it's not like she just harassed him or whatever.
06-16-2017 , 09:18 PM
of course he had 100% free will to not get back in the car

Their statement after this happened was that they needed more info and would comment after the investigation was complete. AFAIK that was the last we heard from them.

The problem with the girl in Mass is that what she didn't pretty clearly seems NOT to be a crime but everyone's gut is that what she did was wrong and should be criminal. So they forced a round peg into a square hole. Reverse jury nullification.

The cop though, that's just regular jury nullification. It's pretty clear that cops just need to create reasonable doubt about whether they were scared and they can light up the concrete jungle like Jesse Ventura in Predator.
(my tinfoil hat says that prosecutors are probably not bringing their A-game to these)

This thread is depressing.
06-17-2017 , 10:04 PM
knowing that someone is actually in the process of killing themselves and not doing anything about it and encouraging them to continue doing it is not a crime?
