There are a near-infinite number of things that, had they been different, the outcome would have been different. Some of those, as you point out, are the fault of the victims, like a "lack of common sense" as you say. Some of those are the fault of the person who killed them. Some of those are the fault of their parents, or their parents parents, or unrelated butterflies flapping their wings.

Why do you give such primacy to one subset of this near-infinite set of things?

A lot of criminal punishment is overly results oriented.

Mistaking a dead person for alive and shooting them isn't a terrible outcome, but it takes a bad person to do it.

Like someone who isn't a ****ing lunatic? Like, maybe, as an infantry officer (quartermaster corps and you know it) you should be able handle a little bit of pressure on an anonymous forum. Freaking out in public isn't a good look for anyone who claims the uniform, especially someone who claims to be an officer. Take your second lieutenant bars, your rotc certificate, and your ndsm to your CC and tell him your not big boy enough for you commission.

Well the thread looked like it was going full ****** attacking soldiers because they don't like one soldiers view. Maybe just a ban avoiding tactic but you can not rule out a complete lack of knowledge of the demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds of the guys that serve in the military. You will never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the average person.
