The sergeant in charge during the
Haditha killings, Frank Wuterich entered a plea deal today that essentially let him off scot free for the killing of 24 Iraqi civilians.
Cliffs:
-A roadside bomb blows up a humvee and kills a popular marine
-A passing taxi is stopped, the four men and the driver are ordered out. Wuterich believes they are the bombers and shoots all five of them on the spot. Sgt De la Cruz testifies that Wuterich told him they would just say the men ran, and also that they shot and urinated on the dead bodies. The men were found to be unarmed and innocent
-Two shots may have rung out from an unknown direction
-A decision is made to storm the nearby houses. Wuterich orders his men to "shoot first and ask questions later".
-The first house is assaulted. Grenades are thrown through the windows and door into an occupied residence. Seven civilians are killed and 2 injured.
-The second house is assaulted. The marines knock on the door and when a man answers the marines fire through the door and kill him. The house is then stormed and the occupants are killed with "well aimed shots". The 8 dead include 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, and 14 year old children as well as a 13 year old girl who was shot and survived.
-A third house is assaulted and 4 brothers inside are killed.
The marine corps then tries to cover up the killings claiming that the dead were killed by shrapnel from the IED blast. Unfortunately, a local journalism student took pictures of the dead bodies showing that they had bullet wounds in their chests. Also, the local doctor who examined the dead bodies refused to play along saying "No organs slashed by shrapnel in any of the bodies"...The victims were shot in the head and chest from close range."
-Eight marines are charged in the crime, including 4 charged with unpremeditated murder.
-The marine corps then decides to drop the charges on several in exchange for their testimony against the "bad apple" Wuterich. Eight marines are granted immunity for their testimony.
-A plea deal is reached that requires Wuterich to serve 0 days in the brig, have his rank reduced to private (but not his pay!!) and nothing else. All of the marines who agreed to testify in exchange for immunity walk away scot free and their testimony isn't even needed!
