Carter

Carter is a very smart guy with a lot of integrity imo. I feel like he was a mediocre administrator, but because he's probably smarter than I am and was certainly in a better position to judge, I can't be too confident when I disagree with him.

He wasn't a super great politician though. Nowhere near as good as Reagan in that department.

Carter served in the military, with distinction.
Reagan made films in the military.

Carter launched an attack on Iran to free hostages.
Reagan sold Iran weapons to free hostages.

He negotiated the most (only) lasting peace treaty in the middle east and nuclear arms agreement with the Soviets.
Reagan supported the Islamic Jihad, right down to supplying literature for Islamic indoctrinization and met with future Taliban leaders in the White House.

241 U.S. Marines were killed in Lebanon and Reagan did? He invaded Grenada a couple days later.

But there were lines for gas? What would you have done about them? Why did the lines and oil embargo end? The oil embargo ended the minute Reagan became president, not because the Ayatolla was scared. Carter had ordered the cessation of oil imports from Iran in response to the hostages being taken. Reagan resumed imports and the hostages were released minutes after Reagan was sworn into office. He wasn't a tough guy. He paid off the terrorists. Later the Iranians kidnapped another group of Americans, and guess what? Reagan paid them off again by supplying them with arms.

Carter was working tirelessly to get the paperwork (the cash) done with the Iranians to get the hostages back. Its pure hogwash that Reagan was anyway responsible for the release.

It's too late to vote but I would have voted Carter. Not because he was a great president but to troll Reagan cultists.

I'm still hoping to troll conservatives one day by getting myself in a Republican presidential primary debate and being booed for saying things Reagan said or did. The current party would hate Reagan.

Yes, because once upon a time the Republicans had an appeal outside the most reactionary sectors of the electorate. But then they decided they were better off throwing in their lot with Real America (TM), and leaving those big coastal States with a lot of electoral votes to the evil liberals.

Reagan cultist here. On election day 11/80 vs 11/88:

inflation:

11/80 = 12.65%

11/88 = 4.25%

unemployment:

11/80 = 7.5%

11/88 = 5.3%

30 yr mortgage rates:

11/80 = 15.47%

11/88 = 9.11%

[/THREAD]

Looks like old ronnie did a pretty good job!

Did any of you guys actually live through the late 70's and 80's? I'm guessing your statist "educators" left out a few salient factoids like these, eh?

Ever try to qualify for a mortgage with the rates >15% ? Facts are damn nasty things.

And he did it all without ever raising taxes or increasing debt!

Oh, wait...

Mostly correct other than the notion the mullahs were concerned the crazy actor might bomb them back into the 7th century from whence they came.

well someone had to get a few jobs, the money printers and the MIC. So how did all that pump & dump turn out again?

Yeah... he was hated by upper income people for dropping their top rate from 70% to 28%.

Imagine the uproar when he closed shelters so the top guys would actually have to pay the 28% and hi earners had to pay a partial tax on their social security INCOME. Also made the self employed pay both the employer AND employee tax on their income.

He was absolutely hated by the rich!!!!

I can't be bothered checking every vote for eligibility, so I'll offer this: from now on until the final, I won't check for invalid votes but will invalidate any pointed out to me within 24 hours of a poll's closure. It's a way of rewarding Get-out-the-voter-ID. However, I'll audit this one.

Reagan wins 30-28 based on raw vote totals. But, invalidating:

Bored5000, nitroller (Carter)

El-Irish, Jim Lahey, mrbaseball, Pun Intended, THEBIGYELLOWJOINT, YoureToast and Country Roads. (Reagan)

Carter wins 28-21.

That would certainly be an improvement from the current options.
