Reagan supporters who know nothing about history are cute in a perverted and amusing way.

All intelligent conservatives should hate Reagan for completely destroying smart conservatism. Reagan is the reason the religious wing has control of the party and the reason all intelligent people are not Republicans.

Gotta vote Reagan, I guess. Carter presidency was some tough years in the country, and Carter didn't really do much to help anything.

If Robert Bork had been confirmed, I might have a different view, though. Having that man on the SCOTUS for the last quarter century would've been kind of terrifying.

I see that this forum hasn't improved in its discourse.

Anyway, I vote Reagan even though conservatives' idolatry of him is way out of hand.

The southern realignment happened with Nixon, not Reagan.

Actually, it was a gradual process with roots stretching back far earlier.

Current vote (I think) is Ronnie +1. We need 2 more peanuts and no more jellybeans imo.

Lyndon B Johnson himself admitted that the passage of the Civil Rights Act is gonna cost the Democrats "the South" for a generation.

Republicans took the bait.

Ford losing the South had a lot more to do with his unpopularity as a candidate. By then, the realignment was already in full swing. Some Republicans even flat out admitted they were giving Democrats the African American vote so they could drive more whites to vote Republican.

Yeah I know that the Civil Rights Act was a huge deal in the Democrats losing the south. But you can't just ignore the Democratic presidential nominee doing well in the south in 1976, 1992, and 1996 imo. To say nothing of all the Democratic governors/congressmen that the deep south kept electing for decades. The "southern relaignment" was far more complicated than just being a simple reaction tot the Civil Rights Act.

Pretty phenomenal how his administration sold weapons to the Iranians in exchage for hostage release and then used the money to fund death squads in central america, people all the way up the the Secretary of Defense were indicted (11 convictions, all pardoned by the then VP, former CIA director and later POTUS) and this goes down as a blip that Reagan isn't held responsible for.

But the economy ruled - with a lot of help from expanding the federal deficit.

Cast a vote, microbet. We need your peanuts!
