I don't know if any of you care. But I spent parts of the day with a family member and congressman (MA - D) on the 9th (the day after the deadline). I was flying into town and he was returning from DC.

He expressed his dissatisfaction with the deal over and over again. He made it clear that he believed the Democrats got absolutely destroyed.

So what was the final number that got "cut"?

PREDICTIVE PROGRAMMING

HOLD EVERYTHING: There's No Budget Deal, And The Government May Still Shut Down

FWIW

But they didn't actually vote on the deal. They voted on a 1-week continuing resolution so they could wrangle up the details for an official vote this week. And that might not work out.
The buzz out of DC is that the number of GOPers who will vote "no" is growing.
John Podhoretz at Commentary thinks that over the next 72 hours, there will be a big anti-deal groundswell, and that we will ultimately have a government shutdown, with the GOP getting the brunt of the blame.

Wouldn't that be a strategical blunder by the R's? This makes it look like they renegged on a deal.

It would seem so but not sure. Maybe it would be more of a sign of Boehner's weakness. We'll find out but I suspect it will pass because enough Dems in the House will vote for it. You never know though, never a dull moment in American politics.

It might actually be a pretty damn good strategy by the R's. It's basically betting on the ignorance of the American People. If the majority of people are well informed and knowledgeable of the situation then it's a bad bet. If the majority of people don't know wtf is really going on, and can only really recognize the president as a national figure then it's a great bet.

Here's the republican talking point if the government shuts down:

"Last week President Obama promised a deal to keep the government running. He failed to deliver on that promise."

the republican version of this still leaves us how many trillions of debt?
LOLOL

Rand Paul says he's considering filibuster of budget agreement

I don't think he can get 40 votes but maybe he can enlist some Dems too. Probably not though. I mean I can't imagine Bernie Sanders, Barbara Boxer, Patty Murray just to name few supporting this deal. Could make for an interesting coalition. I readily admit that it's highly doubtful that it will happen though.

The reason that they are voting no is that it has been discovered that, shockingly, most of the $38.5B in cuts are fake in one way or another; either they were already in the books, come from allocated but unspendable funds (due to other laws), one time gimmicks, etc. Essentially it's a gigantic scam.

Who'd of thunk it?

lol, awesome

Yeah, but Washington, D.C. won't be spending any local money on abortions. And isn't that what really matters?

And Obama will do exactly the same.

I can't believe the government may go to shut down over the equivalent of the change under my couch cushions.
04-13-2011 , 08:59 AM
This bodes well for us ever actually balancing the budget, don't you think?
