The GOP war on voting The GOP war on voting

08-21-2012 , 11:57 PM
Republicans would lose their **** if we had forced registration or mandatory voting like some countries (Argentina I believe). They would absolutely come unhinged.

i wouldn't be too happy about it either, tbh

forcing people to vote would make illegitimate the option of boycotting elections, which is a perfectly valid option

i'd be cool with auto-registration, however that could open up the possibility of more voter fraud, since you would know that everyone is registered

I don't even think mandatory voting could pass constitutional muster without some sort of dangerous amendment. In the same way that freedom of speech protects your right to not speak (i.e. sitting down at school instead of pledging allegiance to the flag) the right to vote includes the right to remain absent from voting.

Might be worth thwarting the constitution just to see the butthurt, tho

Reminds me of a post I made about Larry Flynt back in 2008

The were several snipets from interviews with Larry, and a few other people. In one segment Larry goes on about George W Bush, how horrible he is etc.... and how if everyone were to vote, GWB would never had been re-elected. He then states that he thinks anyone who does not vote should be fined (around $500.00 IIRC)..... I was shocked that the guy who claims to be such a champion of free speech would make a statement like that. Does free speech not include the right to stay home on election day and voice your opinion that all the candidates suck?

Seems to me Flynt may be pro free speech when it works toward his goals, but when the ends result in something he is not in favor of... he sings a different tune.

Am I way off base here or is this a hypocritical stance by Mr. Flynt?

If there isn't already, there should be a saying about how the true test of one's convictions is if you stick to them even when they hinder your preferred goals.

How does this quote work? We're you just sitting there and remembered your post from '08 or did you vaguely remember that you made a post sometime in the past and searched for it? Either way it creeps me out.

Dont places that have mandatory voting also adopt a "none of the above" category on ballots?

Ticking that box is a way better protest than just being lumped in with the lazy and ignorant who dont care. Not that i think you need to have mandatory voting to include the none of the above option.
08-22-2012 , 05:26 PM
Well, it becomes a more feasible way of protesting when you don't specifically have to take off work to vote. But that's another issue altogether... sort of.

According to my friend who lives in Argentina - you have to get a waiver to not vote. But they're pretty easy to get.

Sorry "it doesn't count, it was off record" doesn't work

I like the "why should the voting process contort itself for blacks!?!?" line. This is of course the next evolution of GOP ******ation: the current voting system where blacks are allowed all these opportunities to vote is REVERSE RACISM. Why do you approve of affirmative action voting where blacks get longer hours to vote? ITS JUST COMMON SENSE. Stop reverse racism voting now, stop contorting the voting system for blacks, close down polling locations in the inner cities PRONTO. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE

I don't think I've ever voted on voting day. I always do early voting on the weekend a week or two before. So much easier.

Which is LDO why they hate it.
08-22-2012 , 05:49 PM
Are you black? Voting early is reverse racism against whites ldo.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Republican Party. Where all their actual beliefs are so offensive they are forced to talk in code.

And then they fall all over themselves with butthurt if you ever accuse any of their racist policies of being racist.

"Urban" is the code.

I don't like the idea of mandatory voting because you would have a ton of people who know absolutely nothing about either candidate going in and christmas-tree'ing the ballot because they have to.

(a ton more than those who already basically do that)

I have a pretty good memory of things when I am sober.

There are a handful of first-world countries (Australia, Brazil for instance) with mandatory voting that don't have random bums running the country because the hoi polloi were compelled to vote and checked random boxes and stuff. I'm not going to make a strident case for mandatory voting but countries that have compulsory voting haven't fallen into abject chaos and political disarray.
08-22-2012 , 10:49 PM
That's cool to know about Australia and Brazil. I never suspected it would cause chaos or anything, just thinking that a big portion of the forced votes would be basically meaningless or random. I'm open to being wrong on that, I just don't have a lot of faith in the unwilling voter after listening to many of the willing voters.
