Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.
Cards make more sense than actual stamps. The cost of printing stamps is higher than a small piece of plastic, and there's the problem of paying out change.
Being allowed to withdraw or transfer funds seems like a programming problem.

because b is done by a 3rd party. no one has to get their hands dirty. also, social contract.

I think there's a taxes = theft thread already so not going into this in depth, but the short answer is that one of the two is expected and agreed on by the majority (or at least the majority's elected representatives).

Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.
The social contract is complete nonsense. In order for a contract to be valid, it his to be voluntarily agreed upon. Otherwise it's not a contract, it's coercion.
So I want to steal from you, but I won't do it myself. I'll hire some gangsters to do it and it's all ok then, right?

Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.
Food stamp funds may be reduced
Quote:
WASHINGTON — With 1 in 7 Americans now receiving food stamps, Republicans in Congress are leading efforts to cut back the social safety net program that has swelled to one of the largest in the federal government — and they are getting some support from Democrats.
The farm bill being debated in the Senate reduces funding for food stamps and is finding support from both sides of the aisle as lawmakers look for ways to cut the nation's rising debt in an election year.
...
An estimated 45 million Americans received food stamps in 2011 — more than ever, at a cost of $78 billion. That was a sizable increase from 2007, when 26 million Americans received food assistance at a cost of $30 billion, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Yeah see, minorities rights are supposed to be respected, not trampled upon. Just because "the majority" vote or agree on something, doesn't make it right.

Taking Ron Paul voting tallies as a rough proxy, 95% of the country wants some sort of social contract.
I guess Id be for some way for people to opt-out of the system (i.e., dont pay taxes, but then pay ala-carte whatever the market will bear for defense services, roads, emergency services, etc) I wouldnt be against that.

Again, I don't care what sort of compensation package gets negotiated by other people. I assume they do care and so made a reasonable tradeoff. If instead of the plastic surgery rider, if the teachers union had just gotten an equivalent cash raise, would you be angry? Would you even know that Buffalo teachers make 54k instead of 52k?

So Fly is there any level of expansion of food stamps that you'd be opposed to? How about if we just gave them to everyone, do you think that would be a bad idea? Or do you think the level we're at right now is just about perfect?
|
Nice goal post shift. You and Riverman are both real angry ITT, but you're both really thin on the providing links to actual data on the "abuses" you're angry about. Because it's all anecdotes and shaking your fist at clouds. Hamburgers! They use cards instead of stamps! BIG NUMBERS!
So I have no idea what exactly you guys want. I'm not disagreeing with you so much as I'm confused by how furious you are about problems you apparently can't articulate with any specificity.

Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.
To put it another way, I don't know a lot about the food stamp program(thinly veiled brag?), but reading this thread fails pretty badly at convincing me there are serious problems with it.

Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.
Dude you don't think any spending nominally directed at poor or middle class people is a problem, ever. You have a credibility problem.

Again, not seeing a lot of specifics or data being provided in this post.
Your opinion on my "credibility" problem, equally well supported, is noted.
