Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.

Can I get some citations on % of food stamps being used for non-food and/or really bad food purchases? All these stories of people using them to buy liquor, trading them for drugs, etc. have been floating around for decades. It's just another flavor of the "welfare queens driving Cadillacs" meme.

If all you got is anecdote and hyperbole, then you ain't got ****.

Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.

government: can't avoid it, you've got to pay your taxes no matter what, but they're "accountable"

private charity: you only give them money if you want to, they're horrible because NO ACCOUNTABILITY

wtf dude

It did, quite well, before the government got involved. Do you know how many people starved to death in the US during the Great Depression? Without, omg, food stamps.

and what about all the other stuff government does?

You'd be fine with private charities (legit ones, for real, trust me) just helping themselves to whatever they want out of your bank account, because hey, it's for poor people, right?

Seriously, I don't mean just anyone that says they're a charity, I mean like real bonafide doing-good organizations like, eg, St Jude. They provide FREE CANCER TREATMENT to poor people every day. So they, under your morality, can take your money, it's totally fine, yes?
They already do "take my money" through research grants and government funding for post-graduate medical education, and I'm perfectly fine with that.

You are a very generous and trusting person.

I think that since they've moved away from physical paper and to EBT, the sorts of small-time schemes where people would sell $100 worth of food stamps for $20 worth of beer have evaporated

now instead you have the big-time schemes where mcdonalds is getting into that sweet ebt free mobnies

Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.

There have been 100s of examples of stores "buying" food stamp cards for cash and then charging imaginary food to the government. That is above and beyond people buying non-food products.

Since they've moved to the EBT cards I think most states don't allow you to buy non food things. Iowa's website says you can buy pop, chips, ice cream, and whatever unhealthy food you want but you can't use it on hot meals already made (fast food) or non food products (cigarettes) or alcohol.

Re: Food Stamps Are Out of Control.

Wait, how do you know it's your money supporting these dudes? What if they worked their whole life and need some help in an emergency? It could very well be the tax money they've been paying in their whole lives. They also pay in the rest of their life after they get off food stamps.

Gotta be a level. Or a 12 year old.

I can't imagine any adult with a brain thinking this.

This must be a real problem. The Iowa website for this stuff has a hotline to call if a store offers to buy your card for cash.
