Mods, feel free to put this in the main thread. Just want to get a rough estimate on what everyone thinks.

I agree with the not guilty verdict because the state did not prove anything.

I'll agree to disagree.

Originally I thought this forum would be something like 95% agreeing with the verdict, but after reading the other thread I was starting to think it may be something more like 75% based on people's responses.

There is a similar poll in the unchained portion of politics where approx 80% of the respondents felt that Zim would be found not guilty.

No bastard, no poll. Who cares about the verdict. Real question is can I walk down the street in my hoodie without some nosey fool fronting on my presence?

In Scotish law jury's can return verdicts of innocent, guilty or not proven this is the first time I have really seen a need for the not proven option.

our system is the same, innocent or guilty. you are innocent until proven guilty, if not proven guilty, you are innocent. jury said GZ is innocent.

It's hard to see how someone can fail to grasp such a simple and clearly explained distinction.

Poll really should be public so we can mock the no people.

The question should be 'do you agree with the justice system'? What ever happened to double jeopardy? How can you retrial Zimmerman without new evidence?

Too late now, all the guiltys switched sides to the winning team

actually if you're not proven guilty, then you're not guilty. doesn't mean you're innocent.

btw OP you're poll is too blunt to answer. cause on the one hand, I agree that he should be not guilty of 2nd degree murder that he was charged with. but I think he should have been found guilty of the other charge of manslaughter, yet he was acquitted on both counts.
07-21-2013 , 12:20 PM
If you think he should have been convicted of manslaughter just vote guilty. It's still an utterly absurd position.
07-21-2013 , 01:31 PM
I think that based on the existing laws and what was presented at trial GZ is not guilty.

However, I think that if someone can do what GZ did and not receive any punishment whatsoever, then the problem is with the laws. Of course, writing laws that would result in punishment for GZ but still not punish legit self defense is tricky and would require some serious thought (more than I'm willing to do right now), but I think it could be done.

in lehman's terms sure. But strictly speaking, when you're found "not guilty" in a court of law, it doesn't mean "innocent", it means not guilty. There's a good reason they use those terms you know.

GZ went out of his way to put them both in danger and he made TM feel threatened, then he was irresponsible with his firearm resulting in the death of an unarmed teenager half his size. Sounds criminally negligent to me.

No problem, that's the way I wanted it. If you thought he shouldn't have been found completely not guilty then vote guilty.
