should we conserve our resources should we conserve our resources

08-30-2011 , 12:50 PM
I say no. By the logic of conservationists we should never use resources - after all, if we preserve resources for future consumption, we would not then, by the logic of conservationists, still want to conserve them in this future society? And why should we set aside resources for a future society, which will presumably be far more advanced technologically and with higher standards of living?

Resources are wasted if they sit idle when they could be used to meet the demands and needs of consumers.

op is way too broad.

if you say "no" then nobody should have a refrigerator, canned food, stored drinks, storage at all. it's just individuals on a case by case basis deciding whether or not a particular resource is worth maintaining. if they decide they maintain it. if not they don't

The earth is to it`s core nothing but natural resources.

You dont have to assign as broad scale answer to a broad scale question when that question can be broken down into smaller questions, specifically breaking down what natural resources should be conserved and which shouldnt.
08-30-2011 , 01:33 PM
in that case in the grand scheme of things: I don't know.

We definitely should. If you believe that we shouldn't be concerned about future generations then we shouldn't worry about any deficits.

OP, the correct answer to your question is "sometimes"

OP fails to answer his own question
Question was Should be conserve resources? not Should we abjure using any resources at all?

And the answer is clearly yes. Think of oil and other non-renewable resources in the ground as a bank account. If we "spend" it all now , we and our kids won't have anything left for the future. If we massively decrease our "spending" of the oil, then it'll last longer and the shock when it depletes will be less (as we'll be using less).

If you conserve too many resources especially when their needed you run the risk of recession (see: now)

This is so terrible it leaves me speechless.
Please read an intro to geology textbook, then get back to us on how much of the Earth "to its core" actually has extractable/usable resources.

I think monetary policy is the main contributor to our current recession.

Yeah, energy conservation measures have nothing to do with our current economic mess. High energy prices have played some part, but that is due to lack of conservation (hint: if you use less oil, the price goes down; see:Supply & Demand). Driving more efficient cars fewer miles would do far far more to lower gas prices than drilling in the few places currently off limits.
08-30-2011 , 03:02 PM
There is no need to use less energy.

Just conserve my resources until I am dead, this way I can have them my whole life, and forego using them, so I can save them for the next human, who will conserve them until he is dead.

This makes a lot of sense...

The real problem is while your conserving "your" resources. The other guys are finding, burning, using, their resources to better their lives and their economys while you are conserving yourself into the 3rd world.

Thank god we have prices to help us decide which times are which.

The question to ask is should we have sustainable resources. I say yes. If we are using up gasoline faster than the planet can replace it, I think we should do all we can to preserve.
08-30-2011 , 07:07 PM
I say rape the planet of its resources. I forgot who said this... maybe limbaugh? "the most beautiful thing about a tree is what you do with it after you cut it down"

Has there been a contest going on the last few days to see who can start a thread with the most LOL-worthy initial post?
