If you're looking for something to do while you decide whether being an LEO is compatible with "burn it down", there are apparently some shop owners in Oakland who need someone to "keep the lights on" and "show a presence inside" to try to prevent burning and looting local businesses while the "victims" "peacefully protest".

Looks like they need some good folks out there... Go get'em Clark Kent.

Last night, as Oakland has been so many times before, our city was the backdrop for a demonstration and protest march. Nearly 7,000 people flooded our streets to express their outrage and indignation over the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. People in cities from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles did the same. Unfortunately that’s where the similarities end because as you know, the night of peaceful expression ended in harm being done to our business community and the rest of Oakland.

Tens of businesses including many of our small businesses and other institutions vital to Oaklanders were hit hard. Graffiti and broken windows were left behind by a group of anarchists who continually invade these otherwise peaceful protests with the intention of doing nothing but causing destruction.

While I know it’s little comfort to you, I want to explain why it seems our police department cannot stop them. The police who are responsible for the safety of the crowds and our community during these protests are very often the target themselves. When they step in to stop an act of vandalism while it is happening, they become the new focal point for the crowds which can lead to an escalation of violence, not a decrease in the vandalism.

This is the very difficult set of circumstances we are dealing with. We are deeply sorry that your businesses continue to be targets, but we want you to know we are working hard to employ tactics that will prevent this from happening in the future, while also preserving the very values that we as Oaklanders and as Americans cherish -- even when this balancing act is so hard.

Impacted businesses are being contacted and pointed in the direction of the limited city resources to assist them. They can also reach out directly to Juno Thomas at Oakland’s Business Assistance Center at 238-7952 or JThomas@oaklandnet.com for additional support.

We are also working with police to continually improve our strategies, as well as finding additional ways our community can help, like keeping store lights on and possibly having a presence inside on nights when protests are scheduled to occur as another way of deterring this behavior. We’re also working to get this message to the peaceful protesters so they know how they can help in keeping their good causes and best intentions from being co-opted by an element that does not have them, Oakland or the values we cherish at heart.

I suspect if economy picks up and with lack of founding after elections, BLM will fade away rather quickly. Issues they portray are non existent, you could easily find plenty of questionable police decisions for every other race group when adjusted for high crime rates of black communities and that crime will fall with economic uptick.

They may have had to wait in a longer line, but they had a LOT more to lose. Somehow when they were voting for Obama they found the time. Hell they used the long lines as a reason to be motivated to vote when they were voting for a black guy.

EDIT: When a demographic group has this much at stake I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to turn out. Especially if they are a minority of the population. The only way minority groups get any attention from the political system is if they all vote and vote as a block. Social Security and Medicare are the perfect examples of this: old people ****ing vote which is why we pretend like it's sustainable to have a medical benefits program where people collect 3x what they put in.

Grunch: OP is why I'm still just in a daze. I have people I hung out with high fiving over the win. These people have ****ing kids. Though I've always got a long with people that had other political beliefs, knowing they can overlook these things with a straight face is ****ed up. I'll never be the same with them again. I saw the turnout colored map of my state thinking my city would be more people who went against trump but nah. As of right now I don't care if I ever go out to bars in this city again.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that my rural county in NorCal that had a Reagan Country billboard for several years at the city limits of the largest town went 2-1 Hill so I'm ok hanging out and Starbucks still.

Now you want to get into a discussion of what causes the high crime rate, ok, we can have a talk about lingering effects of racism. But don't say they aren't doing the crimes.

Looks like a racist hate crime to me. Maybe OP should be writing a 2nd open letter to white america apologizing for the systemic racism that permeate urban black sommunities and invariably leads to racially motivated violent crimes such as the one in the video above.
