True. This is a hard issue to discuss with an anarchist like yourself though imo.

When Rahm was elected he stated that the CTU was out of touch and stood in the way of education reform.

When, in 2011, Rahm went to the state legislature to increase the voting requirements to strike for CTU.

June 2011, Rahm appoints the school board (they are not elected in Chicago, Rahm appointed them) they revoked the 4% raise that was in their contract. The same raise they are offered (it is not a 16% raise, it is a 4% raise per year for four years.) to take the 30% increase in hours.

To be fair both sides have been very aggressive during these past two years. Rahm openly disrespectful to the CTU and the CTU has been aggressive in their calls for a strike.

The dispute seems to be whether they are 30% weighted or 40% weighted. I think state law requires they are used to some extent.

EDIT: evaluations 30% test vs. 40% test, I write badly

lol wat? I'm not getting an MD right now, and there's a very good chance I won't stay here for med school. Hell I lived in chicago for over 2 years before deciding to start the med school route.

You're completely clueless.

Let's switch this argument to myself. Pretty obvious I don't know much about irl ikestoys.

I've lived three areas as a citizen with voting rights: chicago suburbs, college in semi-rural illinois, and chicago. I think that I should be the type of citizen who votes/advocates/whatever as if I planned on living there for the rest of my life and raising kids there. As if I may have to actually use the variety of services offered by the place that I am not.

Now that I am in the city of chicago I think that it is extremely important to not advocate for a guy who is looking like he wants to break the chicago teachers union. Schools are a vital service so it is easy to imagine having to use them. I don't think I want to look into a future where my kids are being educated by a busted up or worthless union. Which is what I think Rahm is getting at.

I like the idea of getting to the longer day. The CTU offered 90 minutes longer for free last year. Rahm declined. Which, I think, would have been the best course. Play politics with the union and let them save face and work towards fixing the problem of shortestdaymostmoney. I think rational minds agree with shortestdaymostmoney is not the best situation for the CPS. I don't think you can get that fix overnight. It will either be too expensive for the city or too much of a public ownage of the CTU. Rahm went to battle with the CTU from the beginning of his run as mayor. I think he only goal is to cut costs, nothing else.

I thought you were getting the MD right now. Then the point does not apply to you at all then. I tried to re-articulate my arguement in the reply to pvn and applying it to myself.

I'm applying to medical school, didn't get in last year. Having pro poker player on my resume hurt, but I have a 98th percentile mcat this year. Regardless, med school in chicago costs 40-65k per year in tuition alone. It's not a free ride.

this debate is so infuriating..yea evaluating teachers is hard, no ****, but we have some pretty good data thanks to studies from Harvard and Yale and the work of the Gates foundation about the difference between good teachers and bad. A bottom 5% teacher basically equals a student missing 40% of the school year compared to just an average teacher. All people want to do is have the ****in option of eliminating the retarded teachers. Currently as long as you get by for a few years and get tenure you are set for life. Just absurd. I really wanna know what the unions are offering up as valid means of evaluating teachers are? Is it just impossible? All I see is resistance to any change

No I meant cc. I still don't get the "Chicago enabled your medical degree so BEND OVER" argument
