Better than a ban or a tax would be ending corn subsidies that funnel taxpayer dollars to the building blocks of many obesity-causing foods. I'm tired of subsidizing our own fat asses!

I just finished watching the 4 part series on HBO.... The weight of the nation, one part explored the govt subsidies of corn and soybeans that are used for HF corn syrup and cheap feed for the cattle that also fattens the cattle more quickly.

It could be argued that this was good policy back when it was created, but as with everything in govt, it grows and grows and grows and never shrinks even when it is no longer needed or the situation changes.

Now the people who are on food stamps are fatter than the rest of society.

I would recommend watching the HBO series, a bit of a slant was put on it to push their agenda, but was pretty good all around.

I wasn't referring to if it passed, I was simply referring to the fact that proposing it creates conversation.

I'm also not saying that's why Bloomberg proposed it. I was just saying it's a silver lining.

I don't believe people should be punished for pre-existing conditions in general when buying health insurance, and they aren't all their fault.

Also, simply being overweight does not mean that it was solely due to eating bad food. I am currently overweight because I had sleep apnea for a couple years before it was correctly diagnosed. I was getting no REM sleep and completely sleep deprived and thus stopped working out, due to having no energy, and started craving sugary food to give me energy.

Now that I'm treating the sleep apnea, I'm slowly losing the weight I gained.

How would you distinguish between pushing me for being overweight and punishing somebody who is otherwise healthy and just doesn't want to exercise or eat right?

Depends how you look at it. The metabolism cranks up after sweet foods are eaten, but when you eat stuff that tastes sweet and has no calories, it learns not to crank up... Then when you eat real sugar, it doesn't crank up like it should.

There's also the other bad stuff in it aside from the calories, like the acidity or whatever. But it tastes so damn good!

Not in the least bit. In fact I don't think diet coke is unhealthy at all, it's more like drinking water.

It has no calories in it. The issue with "unhealthiness" is the sugar content, which is high in calories. The reason it's such an issue is because people constantly drink something and you can consume an enormous amount of calories without even noticing.

Fun story, I was playing poker a while ago and ordered a diet coke (with fresh lime obv). The guy to my left says "that stuff'll kill ya" then proceeds to go off on a seemingly uninformed rant about aspartame and cancer and goodness knows what else. I swear on my honour not more than 5 minutes later he, entirely unironically, said "I'm off for a smoke" and left the table.
