Re: Big Brother Is Watching You!!

If only there was an easy way to have end-to-end encryption between downloader and host so the ISPs had no idea what data was being transferred...

I guy can always dream, I guess.

Re: Big Brother Is Watching You!!

most bit torrent clients do use encryption, but it's not very strong. It's intention isn't maximum security, only obfuscation. Still though, even with encrypted connections, when you have a computer that connects to a bunch of different computers and there's a lot of downloading and uploading going on, it's pretty obvious what is occurring: torrents. But they can't tell what's being downloaded or uploaded, so you get moles connecting to you to harvest your IP address and hit up your provider. There are programs with a large database of malicious IP addresses that your bit torrent client won't connect to, but that's no guarantee.

So it's high time people stop using ****ty P2P software to obtain their un-paid-for music, movies and software. It's not like that's the only option available.

eta: If you're too stupid to cover your tracks, you deserve to get caught.

Re: Big Brother Is Watching You!!

the strength of bit torrent is actually it's biggest weakness. It connects directly to peers, allowing for maximum bandwidth and speeds. When you start adding in hops and mix routing and ****, it has negative effects on your speeds and bandwidth. So while people may use Tor for instance instead of bit torrent for greater security, they are vastly in the minority because it is so much slower than bit torrent.

Popular? Nothing.
Superior? Several things that predate P2P file sharing.

P2P made it easy, so everybody started doing it. Suddenly, very little effort or knowledge was required to pirate IP. People took a cavalier attitude towards something that previously required a little work and discretion.

You get what you don't pay for, I guess.

torrenting isn't a violent activity. It's not used with force. It's not hacking. Torrenting is peaceful interaction. Sharing, not stealing.

when people are too stupid or too lazy to figure out why downloading stuff illegally might actually be wrong, they insist on calling it theft

I wonder if somebody out there has used their time and expertise to create a system whereby people can trade information and products more securely... and where I can steal it
