I forget who was asking or where, maybe iron81, but NPR is doing a bit about if electric vehicles put off fewer emissions than petrol, taking into account energy generation.

Ultimately, it depends on where your energy comes from, but they said typically you'll reduce your carbon footprint by at least 50% by using an electric vehicle, not to mention other emissions your car outputs.

They noted that in some areas with newer power plants, it's a close race between electric and a 30+ mpg car, but electrics are more likely to make quicker advances in efficiency than power plants.
