I try to. But coverage in the local paper is pretty bad, and coverage in the Lexington paper is non-existent.

We did just have a tie vote on a fairness ordinance that got a lot of coverage, so next time I'm just gonna base my votes on that roll call.

I have a Chi Tribune subscription, but that isn't local enough when there are something like ten thousand elected officials in the Chicago media market.

The only contested races were for Mayor and two of the three school boards. I skipped the school boards because I didn't have awesome yard sign info.

For instance: Is the Trumpening part of the moral arc bending to justice? Reductions and erosion and devolution away from norms that promote justice are common in history. Take Russia, which in many ways was far freer and more liberal and just 200 years ago under Catherine the Great than Putin. The arc of the universe bends to justice when people desire it and fight for it and preserve it. It isn't a naturally occurring phenomenon.

How the **** is "journalism" like this even legal? Serious question.

Didn't click, and lol @ ever clicking a link to something called freedomsfinalstand dot com.

Anything with the words "liberty," "freedom," or "truth" in the title should be instantly discredited as RWNJ jerkoff material. You don't even need to click one article or read one headline. It is a stone lock from the title alone.

Ferry Boat Captain. It seems to have its drawbacks, but would be hella cool for a little while anyway.

There's a well-regarded historian (I forget who) who makes the case that American race relations actually went backwards considerably in the 1910s-1930s as a kind of backlash against early progress in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. The KKK blossomed, Woodrow Wilson was a huge racist assbag who re-segregated the federal government, a lot of landowning blacks got kicked back into sharecropping. Human progress isn't something that naturally improves monotonically; it takes a lot of pushing to move it forward, and very often it backslides.

So you remember the cops who were aiming for the autistic kid with a toy truck but missed and shot the black therapist who was lying on the ground with his hands up?

And the cops said they mistook the kid's toy truck for a gun and that's why they shot him?

Turns out the audio from the incident has a cop screaming that the kid only has a toy and to stand down before the cops opened fire on the kid.

The police went with the cover up anyways.

Apparently the whole thing was a sh*tshow.

Quote:
The audio tape, indeed, showed Holland had warned that the autistic man was loading a gun. But that warning didn't spark Aledda to shoot. In fact, several moments pass until another sergeant on the scene warns that the man is only holding a toy. Only after that warning did the shooting take place, contends Eugene, who could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

"I heard the sergeant, who advised earlier that it was a toy, say, 'Hold fire! Hold fire! It was a toy,' trying to stop whoever was doing the shooting," Eugene says. "I said, 'Oh lord.'"

anyone go ahead a sign up with a vpn? I found one that's 70-80 bucks for a two full years, up to 6 devices. Seems like a good company too. Only problem is our mac router can't handle VPNs so I'd have to daisy chain routers or something weird.

Right. The quote makes MLK (obviously a hero despite a questionable quote) sound like a Hagelian or modern day Marxist where all events are simply bumps in the road to pre-determined outcomes. I do not find those sort of determinalist takes on history compelling.

I just got rousted by the police in front of my house! He had me sit on the curb, checked my ID, called me in, said I fit the description etc.

My Uber driver was playing some AM Radio show - seemed ok not overly political. Then they had a guest - Father Joseph or something (so you can trust him!) who had written a book about Social Security in the free market. Highlights:
  • We need to stop this inter-generational warfare and kids need to think about taking care of their parents, after all they took care of you when you were little.
  • It's so important to kill Obamacare because we can see how hard it is to end something like SS once the cat it out of the bag.
  • Who's a better steward of your money than you - the govt? They don't care about you.
  • We need to end the stigma around privatizing SS - just own that **** (paraphrased).
  • Zero acknowledgement of course that a freaking pension is completely standard in a first world country - like SS is some grand failed US experiment that's never been tried before anywhere else.

The creepy thing was how softspoken he was. And you know you can trust him because he's a father. The hosts weren't challenging him either and at one point he praised them for the good work they're doing. So they must be big free market fans as well. The bubble is subtle and pervasive and insidious.
