Dammit I'm tired of waiting for you bastards to come up with a clever thread title. I've got things to discuss.
Good article in WSJ about how companies require a degree for all kinds of jobs that in no way require a degree.

“I’ve heard of employers requiring college experience and months of recent work experience for jobs at a call center. Twenty years ago that wouldn’t have been the case,” said Abigail Carlton, a managing director at the Rockefeller Foundation. Only a third of Americans aged 25 to 34 have graduated from college, but a university degree has become a “blunt proxy” for ability, she said, leaving behind many young people who are capable of learning on the job.
So either we a) try to change this culture or b) just say **** it and highly encourage/subsidize everyone to attend college or trade school.
The other added benefit of this as I see it - in this time of massive labor glut that's only getting worse and worse with automation - is it keeps kids out of the workforce for a while longer.
As you know I'm a much bigger fan of creative ways of shrinking the labor pool/hours worked vs. something like straight UBI - for a host of reasons. Regardless of whether or not you think most people are biologically equipped to handle idle time - it's politically moot IMO because white people can't seem to handle minorities getting free money from the govt under any circumstances. And we already have a very ****ty UBI for poor whites - disability.
