Troy vs. Florida International: Epic Ending

I don't know how many of you caught this game, but the ending is kind of a head-scratcher, and very awful if you put money on Troy early @ -9.5, which is what the line was at most places until some late money shifted it to Troy -8 to -9. I cleaned up ESPN's Play-By-Play a little..... FIU had just attempted a 4th and goal and didn't score, that's where we pick up the action with Troy in the lead 42-27......

Troy ball at 1:37 left in 4th quarter

1st and 10 at TROY 6: TROY penalty 3 yard Delay of Game on Team accepted.
1st and 13 at TROY 3: Levi Brown rush for 2 yards to the Troy 5.
2nd and 11 at TROY 5: Timeout FLORIDA INTL, clock 1:32.
2nd and 11 at TROY 5: Levi Brown rush for no gain, fumbled, forced by FIU, recovered by Troy Levi Brown at the Troy 5.
3rd and 11 at TROY 5: Team rush for a loss of 1 yard to the Troy 4.
4th and 12 at TROY 4: Team rush for a loss of 2 yards to the Troy 2.

DRIVE TOTALS: TROY drive: 4 plays -4 yards, 01:33 TROY DOWNS

FIU ball at 0:04

1st and Goal at TROY 2: Paul McCall pass complete to Jason Frierson for 2 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.

Score: 42-33

End of 4th Quarter

Okay, a couple questions:

1) Why not punt on 4th down? Worst case scenario: It gets blocked and FIU recovers for a TD and makes it 42-34 (I assume)..... but could there be time left? I guess there could be a second or two left, they could onside kick it but doesn't time run when the ball hits the ground on a kickoff? Not sure about the rules to be honest, which brings me to........

2) Why wouldn't you take a safety and free kick it? FIU's still down 42-29 and they have 4 seconds left to get two scores......

So basically why kneel it on 3rd and 4th down????

Just thought it was pretty roflcopter for Troy backers.....

Was there no extra point/conversion attempt on the last touchdown?

Why would a coach care about covering the point spread? He wins the game 100% of the time no matter what he does, the only dumb thing was trying to get the first down in the first place and risking the fumble rather than just giving them the ball back with time for one play.

Google says you still attempt the meaningless PAT in NFL, not in college.

What if you score a TD as time expires to go up 1 or 2 in college? Do you still have to snap the PAT?

I dunno about this silliness. However, I was referring to the situation at hand. Virtually nothing to does will cause any change in ExpWin%.

Here is the rule:

Quote:
The ball shall be put in play by the team that scored a six-point touchdown. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, the try shall not be attempted unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.
If a team scored a touchdown to go ahead by 1 or 2 points, then IMO that team should be forced to attempt PAT, as opposing team could theoretically gain 2 points with a turnover and subsequent return. But I doubt any crew would force the winning team to attempt PAT in this case.
