This is pretty much how i feel. I don't think he should ever run a pool again. Also, I think he should have paid all winners promptly, within a week of winning. It's now been 3 weeks and we've been paid 1/4 of what was owed.

Obviously this. The equivocating that people will do to argue personal vendettas is rather amazing. Slowpaying someone or attempting to welch and then changing your mind is immoral. Keeping the information private is also ethically wrong.

I do think we would all agree though that part of the inherent risk with gambling is stuff like this happening - so part of it, whether we recognize it or not, we are tacitly signing off on when we sign up for these types of pools etc. Dont get me wrong, doesn't in any way excuse this guy for being a deadbeat and the expectation is that the % of these types of things occurring is relatively low, but it is part of the risk we take.

glad to see it is working out OP - as others have said, keep collecting schedules as regular as you can. be prepared though, you may get to the end and come up short (from what I know about situations like this, this guy is probably going from robbing peter to pay Paul to robbing mark to pay back peter. if mark gets wise to it then the whole thing can collapse pretty quickly.)

FWIW I think it is better you aren't close friends with the guy - trust me, nothing hits you harder than a good friend owing you money and screwing you over on paying you back.

Thanks Rainmaker, yeah this situation is f-ed up enough without being good friends with the Pool Manager.

We heard from Manager this morning. He is claiming he met with his lawyer and family estate will be settled by end of April and we will all get paid in full by then.

He said he would try to get a 2nd check released by March 15th. He gave us four undated checks. He has released one which we cashed for about a 1/4 of the pool. Not sure how relevant to resolving the situation this is, but 4 checks were drawn on 3 different banks. All of this seems so shady and as pointed out that is part of the risk of participating in a pool like this.

I'm posting our experience for both recommendations and to let other know what can happen if you are in a pool that pays out high 5 figure or 6 figure sums.

Any thoughts on how to respond, in the short term?

I feel like we have to be nice and just wait it out, before unleashing holy he11 if we are not paid in late April..

Seems to be the right play. Obviously once you are paid ensure the guy never runs a pool again but you have to play nice until then. If he doesn't pay in full immediately when the inheritance is settled, you go nuclear on him (and obv make sure he knows it). Hopefully he just makes partial payments until then and pays you in full in April.

If he starts delaying April to May or whatever, you need him to prove that the the money is real and coming on x date under threat of ruining his life basically and if that means him taking you to see the lawyer and the actual documents and get an update on legal proceedings and view the actual documents so be it.

UPDATE March 9, 2017

Pool Manager said he would be in touch with us this week. Partner emailed him on Tuesday to see what next steps/payment plan is.

Pool Manager saying he will try to release next check this week and hopes to release remaining funds by March 16.

Getting slow-paid and having to sweat this bullsheet is super irritating and tilting the fukk out of me.

I'm hoping this will all be resolved soon. I'll keep everyone interested posted. In the meantime, good news is the manager continues to respond to emails within minutes and saying the right things e.g. I want this resolved or It should be soon, etc..

Update March 10

We just heard from Pool Manager he asked us to hold off on cashing check #2 until March 24. He is saying that remaining checks should be ok by end of April. No mention of estate in escrow, so I think that pretense has been dropped.

Not feeling great about the situation. I'll update if we are able to successfully cash on March 24.

Getting slow payed sucks, probably only things worse are not getting paid with no communication AKA getting ghosted or getting slow played then getting stiffed in the end.

Hey dude I don't want a personal check and then have to run around town to make sure the funds are there. Give me a cashiers check or cash, not some undated bs.

He said if we wanted cash we'd have to wait until money from his father's estate cleared. Obviously all of that is bull****. Guy is simply robbing Peter at this point to pay Paul.

We've emailed him requesting to cash check #2 before March 24th. I'll keep you posted.

Pool Manager is also claiming this should all be resolved by end of April, but possibly sooner.

Our main concern is have all checks cashed prior to WSOP in June, so we can donate to the poker community!

Any specific recommendations for going nuclear? Anonymous tip to IRS about him running pool or local sheriff department?

We have email addresses for about 150 or so of the pool participants. Would you still contact all of them after getting paid? Clearly, if not paid in full by July, then everyone on list gets contacted with details.... (unless he intends to pay us with next seasons pool payments.

I assume you have no interest in interacting with this guy anymore once he pays you? If you want to stay on friendly terms with him I guess just let it go, but if you're worried he'll scam other people you probably should tell everyone.

I'd say contact everyone and tell them the truth that he paid, but slowpaid with bad excuses and you're worried any pool he runs at this point may be a ponzi scheme. Obviously if at any point it's clear he's not going to pay what's owed you contact everyone and if you want to trainwreck him as revenge you go nuclear.

Nuclear option is some combination of contact relevant law enforcement re: running an illegal gambling operation with proof of non payment, IRS for tax evasion and guysnameisathiefandscammer.com type websites boosted up the google rankings (only with factual info you can prove 100% to avoid any slander type lawsuits) like the ones the poker stables make about people who steal from them.

Good luck, hope you get the rest of your money
