Cops have got better things to do than busting small-time bookies, and when that does happen, the bookies are the guys who go down, and not their clients.
But that doesn't change the fact that most states DO have anti-gambling laws which are applicable to sports gambling as misdemeanor offenses. I apologize for pointing that out and possibly setting off hysterics on the forum from all the people who thought what we do is totally legal everywhere.

EDIT: I apologize if I came off as alarmist. You are far more likely to be busted for possessing pot in this country than for betting on sports with a bookie or offshore. OP's most likely outcome remains eventually getting paid, with being totally stiffed still possible, though hopefully far less likely.
