Question About Dealing With Bookie Question About Dealing With Bookie

I have been betting with a bookie since October, 2016 betting about 500-2000 per game, betting a couple of times a month. We are supposed to square up every Monday but we typically square up a few days later. He has paid me as much as 2400 in a week before, normally 500 when I win. There was also an occasion where I, having gotten his permission beforehand, slow-paid him 2400 over a period of 2 weeks. Overall (not withstanding the forthcoming story), I am down about 7000 with him and have paid that off in full.

The Monday before last I was due to be paid 1460 but he said he was out of town and would update me that night on when he planned on returning. He didn't follow up. That Wednesday I texted him asking for an update and he said he was still out of town and would see if he could find a way to send me the money. He said there were no banks in his near vicinity (which is true for the place he claimed to be).

Today (the Wednesday of the following week) I texted him asking if he would be available to meet this week, and he has not responded. He normally responds within an hour or two. I'm concerned because I won last week as well and am now owed a balance of $3000. Any advice on how to handle this?

That kind of sucks. But, IMO, your only play here is to remain patient and polite, yet persistent. That you once were slow to settle your account certainly gives him moral authority to slow pay you. I'd give it another week of texts/calls every other day. Do you know any of his other clients? If so, that's something you could use as leverage then. Unless he is pulling the old drop step on everyone, in which case, GG.

I know where a lot of his clients hang out. He is a regular in a high stakes PLO game at a cardhouse in a nearby city.

Sorry for your bad luck. I don't think u slow paying him in the past gives the BM justification for doing the same. Your only recourse is to frequent were his other customers are . Maybe message one of them on sm and see if they have gotten in touch with him.

I am guessing he maybe cash starved . It's common for players / Bms to let each other know before betting if they are going to be not settling the next week because they are oot. Unless the player is a total degen the usual agreement is a carry over . Because he didn't mention he was going oot, you most likely were getting freerolled.

Are you a long term winner or betting sharp/steam? It shouldn't matter but I've been stiffed or slowpayd by cxxx BMs as " a message to all sharps not to bet my shop"

Can u find him on FB? Most bms drink a lot and there is always a chance he lost his phone.

Good luck

your basically out of luck if he doesnt pay. Just sucks but not much u can do.

Debt collection is a messy affair (just went through a terrible episode myself) and ended up telling the guy to drop it because it was more headache than it was worth.

The best leverage is to tell him that you want to settle up, be patient then bad-mouth him publicly that he is a no-pay. this will basically ruin his biz (if he doesnt pay)

To be honest, the lure of dealing with a local is you don't need cash up front. I've got a $3K credit line with my local, allowing me to bet futures without tying up any cash.

Update:

Bookie didn't respond Wednesday by the evening so I called him. He didn't answer and immediately texted me, saying that he couldn't talk because he was driving so to text him??? I said I was wondering if he could meet up to settle. He said he would try to meet me tomorrow or Friday. Did not hear anything from him on Thursday. Texted him Friday early afternoon asking if he would be able to meet tonight. He said he would try but he has something he needs to do, asked me what time I could meet. I told him I would meet at his preferred time. He said he needed to talk to his business partner after he got out of court.

On Monday my balance will be $3000. I'm not really expecting to hear back from him today. Should I contact him again today, over the weekend, or Monday?

It's a very good idea to communicate with a bookie who's business partner is currently "in court."

He's being sarcastic. That is, if a bookie has a partner that has been pinched, there's a chance he's under investigation, too.

And if he's under investigation?

the bookie certainly knows he owes you this money; so either he doesnt have the money or he doesnt intend to pay you (I guess there could be a third option where he has been arrested or something.) follow-up consistently for a few weeks (dont place another bet with him) and see how it goes. if after a week or two more he doesnt respond then follow-up in public at a place you know he might be and see what's up. bookies (and gamblers) work a lot of reputation, so not good for him to screw you out of 1.4k (given how small that is overall) because of the hit his rep could take with other bettors.

true he was accommodating to you, so extending the same courtesy is great; but you were open and direct about needing it ahead of time. he has not responded in-kind (or at all for that matter) so this makes his situation markedly different from yours.

keep us in the loop with how this plays out; good bookies are hard to come by!

OP would be at risk of his name being disclosed as a client. But to what degree he's at risk would largely depend on the gambling statutes of his state. Worst case would be he's treated as no better than the book by the law. Best case would be him getting interviewed by LEOs. In either case, OP is drawing dead on getting paid.

Can you lol please provide links where bettors have been prosecuted like BMs? No , you are providing fantasy and making xxxx up as you go along . Stop posting . Your drivel is painful on our eyes. Millions of US citizens bet on sports every day. Even if it's " against the law" in certain states , they do not get charged .

Sorry, MrAdvantage. My bad. But YOU are the one who asked, "And if he's under investigation?" Fortunately, the odds are way thin that that's the case because, as you pointed out, enforcement is rare. (See also; http://wiat.com/2014/11/07/illegal-s...em-in-alabama/)
Cops have got better things to do than busting small-time bookies, and when that does happen, the bookies are the guys who go down, and not their clients.
But that doesn't change the fact that most states DO have anti-gambling laws which are applicable to sports gambling as misdemeanor offenses. I apologize for pointing that out and possibly setting off hysterics on the forum from all the people who thought what we do is totally legal everywhere.

EDIT: I apologize if I came off as alarmist. You are far more likely to be busted for possessing pot in this country than for betting on sports with a bookie or offshore. OP's most likely outcome remains eventually getting paid, with being totally stiffed still possible, though hopefully far less likely.

You are betting 500 to 2k per game and asking this question?

Take your money and throw it in a bon fire.

Your bookie is an idiot since he should immediately pay you out so he can eventually own your home and bang your wife.

This thread sounds like 2 noobs that have no clue what they are doing.

Most of the replies are from noobs as well.

This is so depressing to read.

Unfortunately you have to wait and probably wontvsee your money anytime soon, if he intended to pay you and didn't actually have the money he could have told you, not disappear out of the blue.
Best you can do is press him and meet him publicly or maybe even set up a payment plan?

Good luck either way.

FINAL UPDATE

A few hours after the bookie said he needed to check with his business partner, I texted him again. He asked if Wednesday night was the only night I could meet as he didn't think he would have enough time to head to the bank. I told him I was flexible and asked if we could meet Tuesday and settle the entire balance. He said that would be okay.

I met him tonight and he paid the entire balance. However, I will have to think very hard about whether or not I will get with him again as I did not enjoy this process and it was a first-hand lesson in hw little power I would have to collect in the event he decides not to pay me.
