If she only qualified second I would assume that means she is not looking great to win the medal. How many swimmers go from not-spectacular qualifying times to winning the gold? Was it a huge margin in her qualifying and just a lousy time too?

That was the qualifying round or whatever it is called. Girl qualifying in first dropped to -600. It's not like you get an advantage or anything for qualifying 1st v. 2nd. v. 3rd, etc. though right?
