(By the way, above isn't meant to be argumentative -- I actually have no experience with either of these two books, and I have no idea if SBR's rating is off-base or unfair in any way. But I would like to learn more, and am curious about your thoughts.)
SBR had an affiliate package that won seven figures off BP. Rather than take their $0 cut from that mess, SBR decided to shake down BP and said, "Hey, let's split off these (winning) Euro accounts and you can pay us our 30% cut of the losers. Sound good?" BP obviously told them GFY. Thereafter, "C" was the rating ceiling without kickbacks. Five years later, BP has had no material complaints and every penny was paid to players. The majority of operators would have stiffed everybody and opened up shop under a new URL, a la SBR darling BetIslands.
The other group was a solid well-run B+ for a decade, then they got lazy and took some big lumps. Again it's a case where they could have disappeared with all the money but they refocused on the profitable aspects of their business and ground down all the debt, albeit slowly.
SBR once valued their integrity more than money but fancy new buildings, a bloated incompetent staff, ownership divorces & kids in private school can't be paid for with sterling reputation. That's not to say they're entirely corrupt. To this day they still turn down large checks from a lot of truly scummy sites.
This may or may not be 100% speculation, the imaginings of a bitter madman.
