you might want to just start with excel until you get a full grasp of what/how you want to go about building.

Re: January-March *Angry and Bitter People* Chatter Thread

baseball is probably the easiest sport to start with since it can be broken down to simple pitcher/batter match-ups. also a lot of analysis has already been done on the sport that you can steal.

r is great for some stuff. maybe start with excel since it's easier to learn and work with. just ask questions here. i'll help with excel and r stuff if it's a question where it's clear you've spent some time thinking about already before asking.

Read the code on this page. Markov chaining will be critical to understanding baseball.

solring - Yeah, I'm kind of not sure either. The guy isn't a winner although he's really really trying apparently. And he isn't really helping anyone that I can see...except I guess to show a general level of how much effort can be put in to still not be a winner.

Other thoughts on the thread? Accepting input from the community here. Lock it up? Are there fans who enjoy it? Anyone who likes it for more than just the entertainment value?

It's not really doing much harm I guess and obviously pre-dates to way before I came in as a mod. But "not doing any harm" probably isn't the standard we want for a thread in here, right?

I think it should be locked as well as that tennis thread. Theyre both break-even at very best over a good enough sample size and its not like theres any good discussion in either thread.

Imo those threads are fine. I just don't read them.

The threads which are bad are the ones like that guy who went crazy because he had $1500 on PKR sportsbook, got helped out and then decided to tell everyone they were wrong.

Re: January-March *Angry and Bitter People* Chatter Thread

Microbob,

This post is to let you and everyone else know that I am boycotting this forum as long as you remain mod. Your whimsical and inconsistent censorship practices are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated by me any longer. Equally unacceptable is what you let slide. It is one thing to over mod or under mod. I have been members of forums that had both of these problems, and it is not ideal but once you figure out what is and not acceptable you live with it. But inconsistent, selective modding is the worst, and completely unacceptable.

Here is a short list of your transgressions (that I am aware of).

1. You allowed a regular poster to purposefully give bad picks to another member who is on tilt, and then laugh at said poster when they lost a lot of $$, without any repercussion.
2. You then let the duped party threaten the life of said poster repeatedly over and over again. I have not gone through the forum rules extensively, but I am pretty sure you are not allowed to threaten the life of other people, and yet you allowed it to happen over and over and over.
3. You allowed a regular poster to wish death and disfigurement to the infant children of other posters, with the only repercussion being to hide the evidence by deleting the post.
4. You allowed the same regular member to post malicious fake personal information on other posters, again with the only repercussion being to hide the evidence by deleting the post.
5. You allow a troll (EarlyCurley) to repeatedly past post picks and give extensive past-post analysis, and then when everyone tells him to stop and he refuses to do so, and as a result he is berated by pretty much everyone, including well respected regular posters, you admonish the respected posters and give them infractions but do nothing to censor EarlyCurley.
6. You allow former regular posters, most notably B00T, to be pretty much 100% venomous trolls. Seriously, go through B00T's recent post history. Whatever he once was to this forum he no longer is, and every post is pretty much calling someone (often me) an idiot. And this is completely ok with you. You pretty much allow Iowa to do the same thing, although he balances his range with useful posts, unlike B00T.

And then on the flip side:

1. You gave me an infraction for saying I liked Skip Bayless. Yes, that was not a joke, he really gave me an infraction.
2. You banned me for 3 days for "bumping." Yes, I bumped a post that was still on the front page and got a 3 day ban for this.

Really? Bumping a thread that is still on the first page is a bannable offense? But wishing death to infant children, saying you are going to kill other members, and repeatedly calling people idiots over and over and over again is ok?

Even if you argue that you were not banning me for the bump itself, but for the totality of my behavior (which is all fun and lighthearted), you are still going to argue the totality of my behavior is worse than wishing people death, flagrantly repeatedly violating one of the few rules of this forum (past posting), and calling people idiots?

And then you tell me if I cannot get on page with your program that I should get lost? Well, I am sorry, your program is not acceptable, so I guess you are getting what you wish, so I am getting lost.
