Melbourne Cup
The two French Raiders at the top of the weightscale and betting look to have a stranglehold on the $6Million (USD ~$6.1million) 2 mile H'cap.
3pm Australian Eastern Summer Time.
1. Dunaden 59kg 7y h - Last years winner/HK International Vase winner and 7-1 on the second line of betting is my clear top pick. Despite giving away weight the cross-reference through the Hardwicke Grp2 WFA and the Caulfield Cup Grp1 Hcp - suggest that he is well capable of beating home other better weighter raiding hopefuls. Locals look the thinnest representation in memory so no real threat lies there. History suggests that 59kg is too much weight - I suggest that Melbourne has not seen the quality of stayer that Dunaden represents.
2. Americian - 58kg 8yo H - 2010 winner and 4th last year. 4-1fav Represents the clear threat to Dunaden. Local owners transferred Americain into a local trainers hands after 2010 win and the horse has not performed upto best. Back in Dupre's hand - the horse performed credibly behind Dunaden in Caufield Cup and appeared in need of race. Beating multi-hemisphere group 1 mile and a quarter Australian Champion into 3rd when he won in 2010 - if the expected improvement into this run is realised looks the main threat.
Best outsider
5. Winchester 55.5kg 8yo h - 33-1 4time Group 1 winning American starter has been 18months since winning Group 1 Saratoga Sword Dancer Invitational Group 1 mile and half. Has been quietly improving although off a moderate base in 4 runs here in Australia. Finished off last two furlongs in slick time expecially last start in Grp1 Mackinnon stakes Mile + 1/4. Poorly drawn but a backmarker with a powerful closer burst with flemingtons 550m straight means horse should get every chance despite poor draw. At 33-1 price suggests we get value for more recently better performed horses.
Hope you get a chance to watch the 100,000 plus crowd and great international field tommorrow.
Good luck and back a winner.
