The second best eater not named Takeru Kobayashi can't even get beyond sixty. Joey only ate 61 last year which was blamed on the cold weather.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan...Eating_Contest

Pinnacle have a line where they give the nearest competitor a +8.5 hot dogs headstart (-165). Joey to beat the handicap is (+140).

There is absolutely no reason (other than sure bloody-minded 'ego') for Joey to go over 66.5 hot dogs (+128, the under 66.5 hot dogs is -150) unless Eric Stonie has somehow exponentially for a third year in a row increased his ability to ingest more hot dogs (51 in 2013 and 56 in 2014).

The next nearest guy after those two is Tim Janus (50 in 2013 but only 44 in 2014) so there is virtually no competition.

Also, Joey to win is (-766) and The Field is (+550). Barring choking or deliberately not trying, Joey's going to win.

What will the female winner eat? Over 37.5 hot dogs is (-155) and under 37.5 is (+132).

No Kobayashi makes this contest an absolute procession than it already was. Not even the UK bookies can be bothered to put up odds for this unless they just crib from Pinnacle in which case I'd go for the 'under 66.5'.

Unless Eric Stonie really REALLY pushes Joey (Eric likely won't reach 60 though) and/or there's a bonus for breaking the record as Joey aims for SEVENTY, Joey will coast towards an inevitable win in the last two of the ten allotted minutes probably stopping at 64.

Not quite as Joey did add a caveat though...

https://twitter.com/joeyjaws/status/...283201?lang=en

If Joey doesn't stop at seventy and there isn't a monetary bonus on offer then he's an arrogant fool. He should be doing the 'Sergei Bubka' method of incrementally beating his own record. He should stop at seventy even with conditions in his favour as nobody else will catch that total...not even Kobayashi will be able to do that,

I don't think Eric Stonie manages sixty. There should be odds on that.

...oh, and Takeru Kobayashi apparently IS in the contest.

All positive points that Joey will be going for the 'over 66.5' but what will the weather be like at 12:40pm EST in Coney Island?

If they blamed the 'cold weather' last year for Joey only eating 61 then what about this year? It could be irrelevant if Joey goes past 67, or a coincidence &/or possible even 'fact' if he doesn't.

Can't really go big on Joey to win anything significant. I'm sure there's a 'house limit' at Pinnacle even if the odds are 12/1 ON for Joey to win over at Betfair. The field is 6/1 against.

Currently 11/10 for the 'Joey over 66.5' and 4/6 for 'Joey under 66.5' at Betfair.

Miki Sudo retains after her surprise win last year as she eats...38, which beats the over by half a hot dog. Perennial favourite Sonia Thomas could only manage 31.

Wasn't looking around but Sudo apparently went from (-160) to (-240) to win the women's event. No idea which bookie was putting odds up.

Context of both of Joey's tweets:

Yeah, no mention of Kobayashi around just reports. I think the news outlets have taken Joey's comments that he was willing to face Takeru 'one more time' as actual news that it meant today.

welp won the over on the womens

stonie claims to be able to eat over 60

Hmmm. If Joey wins and eats 70, he'll possibly...retire? I doubt it. It's essentially 'free money' for him.

He generally earns six figures a year which is nothing to be uh, scoffed at.

Sometimes you've got to act on that gut feeling, bing.

Joey was talking a good game. How would anyone predict that Joey would eat 60 or less!?

I honestly didn't think Matt Stonie could beat him.

this was the first year I didnt bet this in like 6 years (was on the golf course and completely forgot) and im happy cuz I was definitely taking joey chestnut overs as I am wont to do. My most square bet I make all year but its worth it. Watching someone scarf down 70 hot dogs on july 4th and winning money off of it is just so american it actually should be considered treason not to.
