Re: SSNL Goes to Thailand
Anyone worried about weed in thailand? I smoke pretty regularly and going to Thailand for a few months and not being able to smoke would be pretty crappy.

When we were on koh phangan we smell it from the street and basicly knocked on the door and ask for it and we got it. It was fine, no problems.

7 years for possession, execution for trafficking. But Thai rasta's sell it everywhere and it's easy to get a hold of. I found it much worse than Canadian stuff.
Pattaya is basically a sex tourist destination. On Phuket there is Patong beach which is also a sex tourist spot, and has loads of nightlife. But there are also lots of beachs that are almost empty, and phuket town which is full of regular thai ppl (girls). I have never been to Pattaya but I couldn't imagine living there. I have been to bangkok a couple times and always had fun, but it's a huge filthy city and I always preferred the beach and jungle on Phuket after a few days. The girls in Bangkok are def better than the girls in Phuket though.
Phuket is "westernized" after a fashion but it's still very primitive. If you want Italian or french or Macdonalds you can get a hold of it pretty easily, however it's still very very thai and poor. Western food is available like it woudln't be in lots of parts of thailand, but there is still 20 Thai food places for every western restaurant even in the main tourist spots.

Re: SSNL Goes to Thailand
Wee looking forward to this already.
FWIW I have semicommitted for the 3 month, starting January (only not doing it if I somehow don't get my thesis done).
I second what bilbo said about water and "usually ok after 3 days". That's pretty much exactly how it is in Ethiopia (which is about the only country I have been to that I'd concider on or below the level of Thailand when it comes to hygiene).

I spoke about this with a few other 2p2ers all of whom smoke regularly, including myself, and we pretty much agreed there is no chance we were gonna smoke when over there

Re: SSNL Goes to Thailand
I just checked the Rosetta Stone demo - Thai. Seems like a pretty fun language to learn, if I go I'll buy it.

Tons of Thais smoke. Not hard to get at all. As long as you're not dumb about it and go asking random ppl for weed, you won't get a second look from police. I'm pretty sure that if you are unlucky enough to get caught with weed, you'll just get shaken down for a hefty fine.

I'm not going to recommend breaking thai law (lol, see above), but once you get here you'll realize that it's a lot more lax IRL than on paper.

I came to Phuket for a couple weeks and got stuck for 5 months, so I'm a bit biased . And there will be at least 10 other 2+2ers in Phuket from Oct - February. I will say that Pattaya is probably not as sleazy as it's reputation.
