Something else In Holland there is a big possibility that there will be a new "elfstedentocht" (11 city tour). Holland is a real ice skating country and in 1909 there was the first tour through 11 cities in the northern part of Holland. Since 1909 there have only been 17 times that the race could continue, because of the thickness of the ice. In 1997 this was the last time and now it could happen again in 2012.

This is really big here so everyone is nervous and the ice gets controlled and cleared of snow every day lol.

Some facts:

- +- 20k people want to start
- 200km (124 mile) long
- +- 7 hour ride starting at 6am.
- expected 100 milllion euro in profits

I really don't give a rats ass about the elfstedentocht. It annoys me that so much news is wasted on it. Go and do a million laps on an ice rink.

Interesting, is hockey not very big there? I'd think a country full of good skaters could produce some pretty good players.

Nope, hockey on ice is non existent here. I wouldn't even know if my town (5th or 6th biggest in holland) has an amateur team.

We excel at ice skating and are good at field hockey, but apparaently noone ever combines the two in here. I guess because you can't just pick it up and play with your friends on a random afternoon, but involves a ton of gear, preparation etc.
