Yep! Just bought a kayak two months ago, actually. It's pretty fun after you get used to positioning the kayak for fishing. I'd say I spent 90% of the time positioning and 10% fishing for my first few trips on the river.

Kind of scary up here though, considering if I fall in the water, it's pretty much instant hypothermia. The water temps are somewhere around 38-39 as of right now.

Awesome! I think I'm leaning towards a canoe or a tandem kayak so I can bring people along that might want to come whenever. How do you store the poles/tackle or bait/fish? They all seem pretty compact and I've seen a few addons but then that looks bulky.

A tandem kayak could be cool, but might make it a bit slow if you want to eventually go out on the water by yourself. Canoes are always fun too, though.

I own this model:

http://www.basspro.com/Ascendtrade;-...SELL_THUMBNAIL

It comes with a total of 3 rod holders, but the one in the front is way too far forward to be practical imo.

There's a lot of storage space in this model. The bow dry hatch is huge by itself, but between that and the sternwell area, you honestly don't need much more space. If you do, a kayak probably isn't your best option.

I plan on adding tons of mods - probably at least two better placed rod holders, a fish finder, and I'm possibly going to build my own outriggers to make it stable enough to stand on.

It's a 12 foot kayak, which makes it somewhat awkward to put on top of my compact car, but it works. I have no roof rack - I just use a kayak carry kit which consists of two foam blocks, a strap, and a bow/stern tie.

I don't think I'd ever like having a sit-in kayak after owning a sit-on-top. More storage space, less having to bail water out, less chance of drowning.

I love my kayak so far, but for your purposes, you might be better off with a canoe if you're looking to take people on the water with you now and then.

Scarlett Johansson is curvy. That chick is fat. There's a reason she's in all those ridiculous poses in the pictures.

maybe he's a FA :/ You have people like that. Also Jessiba Alba is just the nuts. I follow her on facebook and she posts often pictures haha. She's (imo) one of the biggest hotties (natural).

Thanks for the advice Chaos!

+ 1 on Jessica Alba being amazingly hot, her and Natalie Portman are omnomnom.

This was definitely the scariest thing about kayaking for me. Some of the most fun I've had was a ~week long kayaking trip in the kenai fjords. You can kayak right up to where glaciers are collapsing into the water, see whales up close, etc., and nobody else is even remotely close to you. On the other hand, you have to get really good at re-entering the kayak if you bail, because there literally isn't time to swim to shore.

Yeah, at my latitude (during this time of year anyway), I try to wear as little cotton as possible. Cotton is a terrible insulator when it's wet. Mostly I wear wool/lycra blends, and neoprene waders. If I could afford it, I'd buy a semi-dry suit.

Basically I dress to swim, and pack an emergency drybag with road flares, high calorie foods, emergency phone, etc etc.

I guess you can become hypothermic in water as warm as 79 degrees, so bear that in mind if you ever buy a boat, and always wear a PFD!

It's been 15 or 16 years since I last went out in a kayak, I'd completely forgotten that it was even possible to get back in once you fall out until I google image searched and remembered how it goes. The alternative is to not fall out of course. If you capsize you can still eskimo roll if you don't fall out.

wtf, so if you kayak in cold water and fall out you like... insta-die?

guess that means Ill never go kayaking
01-09-2012 , 02:11 PM
Or just go from like July to November

no you won't insta die, but you have to know how to survive the situation and your brain won't be functioning at peak performance

also, most people only kayak spring/summer/fall
01-09-2012 , 02:18 PM
Yeah. In retrospect, I'm not sure if I would have done the sea kayaking near glaciers if I'd actually understood the risks. But, given that I did, it was awesome :-)

well obviously I was exaggerating, but yeah. I have the endurance of a 70 year old and I freak out when I get knocked down in a street fighter match, I doubt I would survive

still, sounds fun. not sure if there are places to go in Japan though
01-09-2012 , 02:42 PM
I know nobody's saying otherwise, but I'm enjoying dredging up old kayaking memories. Summer/autumn should be better than spring because water holds its temperature for much longer than the atmosphere does. Water in May is going to be a lot colder than in October.

How about the ocean?

I hear ocean kayaking is pretty awesome. I'd definitely want a guide, though.

Yeah, this is definitely true. The rivers around here in spring usually run at around 50-65 degrees F. That's really cold if you have to stand/sit in it for an extended period of time.

dude get a gopro hd and make some vids pls. Would love to see the environment. I have canoed before in the Ardens here but only like 10 miles on a day river down.
