OTOH, the 80 hour thing is bull****. Just about any starting job with a computer science degree is going to be near 100k in NYC, and those are def 40-50 hour work weeks.

The 80-hour, $100k job might describe some guy in finance who wants to be making $500k in several years, but that isn't a typical job.
dunno dude, my buddy with an eng/comp sci degree works many Saturdays and his team is on call for whenever the software goes down or something (can be any time, any day)--I was just basing it on that

obv finance/law/whatever you are working 60 hours minimum

and yeah, I don't drink as much as most people probably, haha

Enough alcohol for a couple of months and it only cost ~$100. 5 gallons of an extra special bitter, 5 gallons of an ipa, and 5 gallons of an imperial stout.

Probably drank a gallon or so of the stout myself on Sunday.

Looks awesome, super jealous!
02-07-2012 , 03:39 PM
I used to drink a lot, but now I almost don't drink any alcohol anymore and focus on the gym!
02-07-2012 , 03:46 PM
That's why you're unhappy.
02-07-2012 , 03:56 PM

i work in the consulting practice of one of the big 4, there are so many applicants these days we don't usually consider resumes lower than a 3.5 GPA overall. however, as someone who now reviews resumes, performs interviews/screens, and is heavily involved in recruiting (considering I'm not an HR person) I would say the most important thing to any resume is prior work experience and the SKILLS section. as for the GPA thing, there are a few people who say they don't like super high GPAs and consider other things but I would say these people are few and far between than those who just look at the GPA right away and then dump a resume if it's not > x

i may be biased though because I'm in a more technology based consulting practice

Connecting LI to other 2p2ers seems like a good idea. Sent a PM to you and LT22, if anyone else wants to connect to me send me a PM.
02-07-2012 , 05:14 PM
Seems like a great idea to connect. You just never know when it will come in handy. I'm applying to a few accounting/finance internships and my sister is going to end up being an amazing resource. She has talked to the recruiters at her former company and her current company and is going to do a lot for me. Her old college roommate is married to the Director of Assurance (audit) at a local headquarters of national marketing firm and that connection will also be valuable even though I'm not particularly interested in auditing. Everyone I know thinks the world of my sister, so I'm thinking her recommendation is going to be a tremendous asset to me.

I'll connect with you guys tonight when I get home. Anybody else wants to connect PM me!
02-07-2012 , 05:35 PM
Connecting certainly won't hurt, even though you are on the other side of the planet. PM me whoever is interested.
02-07-2012 , 05:40 PM

If you were to start a scholarship, what field would you choose and why? Criteria?
02-07-2012 , 08:46 PM
If I were feasibly well off enough to give away money to kids going to college I would probably have some type of higher knowledge level in whatever trait that I got paid decently for? (Unless I am a rich heir or something) So I reckon I would rather take in a few people interested in what I am doing and teach them what I know. I think it's better for a variety of reasons but the biggest is that I think (at least in my experience) college education is largely a waste of time, and that if you know what you want to do when you graduate and it's something I have a higher knowledge of, then I can teach you more in a shorter time period than a traditional college education can.

Not sure what criteria I'd have, something along the lines of proving how passionate you are for what I am doing, how knowledgeable you are already, and showing that you complete projects regardless of external circumstances.

look at us talking about real jobs and careers and ****. a year ago I wonder if anyone thought it would come to this. I just did my finances for January and overviewed some other stuff, which reminded me i'm losing money or barely scrapping by each month since poker ended. fml on that score.

along the careers line, anyone have experience with the CFA? I ordered the 2011 curriculum books and plan to start reading through them with a ballpark goal of taking the december exam. I figure the CFA route would be both cheaper and more interesting than an MBA or master's degree, but I'm not completely sure about the job prospects. All I know is that I need to do something that will get me more money because what I'm presently doing is not cutting it.
02-07-2012 , 11:00 PM
I know there are a lot of threads in Business, Finance, and Investing regarding the CFA. IIRC, the pass rate is quite low. Not sure about job prospects, but overall finance is a pretty competitive field.

i had this job while i grinded, i just used to think about poker all the time

now it's time to focus on the career lol

Something else In Holland there is a big possibility that there will be a new "elfstedentocht" (11 city tour). Holland is a real ice skating country and in 1909 there was the first tour through 11 cities in the northern part of Holland. Since 1909 there have only been 17 times that the race could continue, because of the thickness of the ice. In 1997 this was the last time and now it could happen again in 2012.

This is really big here so everyone is nervous and the ice gets controlled and cleared of snow every day lol.

Some facts:

- +- 20k people want to start
- 200km (124 mile) long
- +- 7 hour ride starting at 6am.
- expected 100 milllion euro in profits

youtube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBw6mwfoAxE

Would be really awesome, because this is a historic event that just doesn't happen that often.
