I'm super close to just pulling the trigger on Tulane for a variety of reasons. Biggest pro is that while I'm not 100% sure on what I want to do, I'm leaning heavily towards a trauma/surgery track and Tulane matches 14% to gen surg/ortho while UIC does 9%. Tulane is rated higher but does cost 20k/yr more and means no wife for at least 1.
I'm never going to UIC if I get assigned to the Peoria or Rockford campus. The wife won't be able to get a job there ever, and both towns are ****holes with **** hospitals that would write me **** LORs for residency.
Another thing is that I just don't seem to fit into Tulane a lot more. It's absurd that I haven't been accepted by UIC yet, and it's 100% due to poker. I'm an instate kid with a decent gpa and a MCAT score 2 points higher than their 90th percentile accepted. They clearly don't like me, and I'm pretty awesome so **** them. The poker stuff was auto-accepted at Tulane and treated as a huge positive. Hell, they even talked about recruiting the wife because they love power couples.
UIC has another adcom meeting this thursday. Going to confirm with Tulane about some details and probably just commit if I don't hear anything from UIC by the end of the week. If I don't get in after this adcom meeting my location appeal probably won't matter and it's super likely I'll be stuck in the sticks if I want to stay instate.
