Flopzilla, it's pretty great for a lot of other things too and it's inexpensive

Re: ****SUMMER IS HERE 2012 LIFE THREAD****
Cross post, but I know that most of you guys don't frequent OOT, and like food.
So a guy walks into a high end butcher shop and says “Holy **** that rack of prime rib looks amazing, in the words of Mac Mall – ‘I gots 2 have it’”. He then goes home and sous vides it.
I wrote up the process at http://www.eatdrinkcheer.com/?p=842.

Re: ****SUMMER IS HERE 2012 LIFE THREAD****
I am guessing several of you guys have been to thailand?
I am considering taking a two week holiday there next month, but it is a bit above budget. What should we expect to pay for meals? We are staying in a hotel near patong beach in phuket, and we typically just like to eat in random simple restaurants. What should I expect to pay for a meal, a beer, a cocktail, stuff like that?

Re: ****SUMMER IS HERE 2012 LIFE THREAD****
meals- super ****ing cheap. a few $ per meal usually. i don't think you should pay more than $10 per meal, and usually much cheaper.
you can get beers fairly cheap too.
overall, thailand is pretty cheap. the flight is easily the most expensive thing (at least for me- i'm from the U.S.).

Re: ****SUMMER IS HERE 2012 LIFE THREAD****
Other people will be able to handle this better than me, as its been a few years since I was there but:
Western food you will play close to what you would pay at home, though it may be slightly cheaper.
Thai food at simple restaurants would probably cost you maybe $3-4/meal, thai food from really simple places (which often have some amazing food) would be $1-2/meal.
Beers at a bar are ~$1, though it would go up for fancier places. Mixed drinks probably $2, and cocktails 3?
It's been about 4 years, so others will have more useful advice, but its a start. The only thing I remember for certain was that Heineken's at most bars cost me $1.50 NZ, so 1E?

Western food is going to be marked up around Patong, but if you are willing to eat thai food, especially street food, it is basically free.

Re: ****SUMMER IS HERE 2012 LIFE THREAD****
as long as you can afford a 12K couch thailand isn't expensive Tickets are 750 euro a person so you should have a 2 week holiday for like 3k euro?

BKK is actually a decent food city, but anywhere else everything sucks bad except thai food.
