How do you assign ranges to unknown players at a new table?

I started learning about hand ranges but it seems a lot to apply in my game. I was wondering how you guys assign ranges to a new player if you do not have enough heads up history with him. Especially for sites like ignition, there is no way you can have a large sample. In that case how you deal with ranges? Do you assign ranges for different positions also (early, middle, late etc.)? Besides, how do you go about assigning raising, 3-betting and flatting ranges to your opponent? Please suggest any good resources (books/videos/software) for learning ranges. Any help is appreciated.
