99 facing all-in raise 99 facing all-in raise

I had 99, opened and got a few calls. The flop came 852 or something like that. I bet, everyone folds except a short-stacked player who calls. Turn is a J, I make a fairly big bet, and the guy insta-shoves. I had him covered but it was still a big bet. I had a feeling he had A8 or something like that, or a draw. Something about his body language made me think he wanted me to fold. I decide to fold my 99 anyway. Was this the wrong play?

I feel like the only thing he could have had (other than A8 or a draw) was a set. I had opened pre-flop and he called, so I doubt he had 85, 82, or 52. I also doubt he had AA, KK, or QQ, because he would have probably re-raised me pre-flop instead of flatting.

Later on, I saw the same guy lose a big hand where he shoved all-in with top pair and got called, so I wouldn't put it past him to shove with A8 in that situation, being short-stacked. But at the same time, I didn't want to call off a large amount of chips and feel like an idiot when he flips over his 88, 55, 22, or J8.

Well you raised how much preflop? And what happened? 99 is not such an amazing hand but given how you describe him, he can basically have anything. Depending on how big his raise is, I'd definitely call here.

Any suited cards?? Man you described that hand poorly.

The blinds were 25-25 in the local currency ($1.60-$1.60 in US dollars). I raised to 100 or 125 pre-flop and he called. The flop was an 8 and 2 low cards, no straight possiblilty (let's say 852 for the sake of argument). I raise to 400 and he calls. He had about 1700 behind. Turn is a J, and I bet 600 and he insta-shoves. I think for a minute and fold.

My stack was about 6000 or 6500 at the start of the hand (local currency).

I had a feeling he didn't have a monster. But I didn't want to call off so many chips in that situation. At this casino, I've called people down in situations like that and they almost always have a set or two pair.
