100NL: Straight facing river raise

$0.50/$1 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

MP: $93 (93 bb)
CO: $100 (100 bb)
BTN: $59.60 (59.6 bb)
SB: $35.55 (35.6 bb)
Hero (BB): $107.13 (107.1 bb)
UTG: $100 (100 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with T 9
3 folds, BTN raises to $3, SB folds, Hero calls $2

Flop: ($6.50) J 6 8 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN checks

Turn: ($6.50) 8 (2 players)
Hero bets $4.09, BTN calls $4.09

River: ($14.68) 7 (2 players)
Hero bets $9.25, BTN raises to $20, Hero? (BT has $32.51 left)

Villain was unknown shorter stacked multitabler.
Should i 3bet river? Iv got to expect him to value raise 8x and call a shove with it, but he is shorter stacked(so perhaps not very good) so is it possible?

Re: 100NL: Straight facing river raise

given his line he has 8x like a LOT and you lose to 87 (only one suited combo left, would he raise 87o? can probably be discounted a bit given his sizing and multitabling), 77 i guess is possible too. but he can have so many A8/K8 or even worse 8x that he probably won't fold, i'd go for the ship.

I would just call. I think if he's a bad player he can have both JJ/66 in his range. They like to slowplay these hands. Also if he just had an 8, would he min-raise the turn? as they always do.

Re: 100NL: Straight facing river raise

It all comes down to how often he flats the turn and raises the river with a naked 8. If we give him some (maybe 2 of the 7?) combos of tricky flopped sets, all 3 combos of 77, all 6 combos of 87... that's 11 combos that beat us, so there must be >11 combos of hands we beat that will call a shove to make shoving > calling. A8 alone is 8 combos. I think the chances a shorter stack plays a random naked 8 this way and calls it off are good enough to justify shoving here. FWIW I expect to be chopping pretty often.

Re: 100NL: Straight facing river raise

agree with lejean, c/jam river

cuz he value bets all the hands that call a bet himself(Jx/slowplayed QQ+, 8x), the counter argument that betting ourselves is better would be to get called by 99/TT, but we block those so its only 6 combos, also he then turns whatever random shortstacking horribly played combos(turned flushdraws?) into a bluff some nonzero % of the time, AND it's also the most efficient way to get all the money in against 8x

Last edited by shipit2kg; 08-07-2012 at 01:32 PM. Reason: why c/r over betting

pretty sure he has 77 here, i'd obviously call though bc he can raise 8x, but I definitely wouldn't push

Re: 100NL: Straight facing river raise

bu opening range will be relevant here if he opens like 70%+ i might consider jamming cos he has many more 8x combos
