A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Friday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer."

The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on Friday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on Friday, it’s your day in the well.
Leroy suggested that I do a well and I thought it would be a good way to give back a little to the community.

I'm free this afternoon and any questions posted after that I'll try to reply to within a day or so.

is your goal to grind out midstakes?

or are you willing to risk your financial stability to eventually go for the nosebleeds?

I'm 23 in a few weeks.

I got into poker the same way a lot of people did - watching it on TV. I was at a friends place and it came on, I had no idea what we were watching so one of them explained it to me. It piqued my interest and from there I went home and did some research, found some forums / articles etc, and made a play money account. I was only 17 at the time.

I dabbled in freerolls and play money for a few months until I finally deposited $50 to party poker using my brothers credit card and jumped right into 25NL. Using the epic BRM strategy of two buyins, I ran that up to $1k (still staying at 25 NL though).

After that I tried everything. Just about everything. I played SNGs, limit holdem, stud, stud8, razz, PLO, PLO8, LO8, HORSE, HU SNGs, HU cash games, MTTs, NLHE cash games (ofc), i tried 4 tabling and i tried 8+ tabling, i bonus-whored and i worked on my game, i just tried everything.

Eventually I settled into playing 1/2 NLHE 6max on Stars back when the games were good and stayed there for a few months with a 2-3ptbb/100 winrate. I kept taking shots at higher stakes and eventually broke through. After that I game selected a lot of NL400 to NL2000 on a whole bunch of sites and made some good money doing so.

I was super lazy throughout this time and didn't make anywhere near as much as I should have. I found 2-7 Triple Draw and loved the game so I played that exclusively for about 4-6 months (30/60). I made a lot of money doing that. I played a lot of chinese poker with my friends and probably lived off my neutral EV gambling profits for a good 6 months.

Eventually I settled into playing PLO, 100bb stacks, and really enjoyed the game. I was mostly breaking even but then I started hanging out with a couple of friends who had made a lot of money short stacking the PLO games so I decided to do that. It was bumpy to begin with but before long I was making a healthy profit from doing that. I never really stopped but have since built up my deepstack game to a point that I am very happy with and find myself beating most midstakes games for a decent winrate.

Last year I decided to go for and accomplished making Supernova Elite on Stars. I would say about 70% of my play was shallow stacked with 30% being deep. So far this year it is about 50/50.

There are plenty of more exciting times and stories that happened to me along the way but we'd be here for weeks if I went through them all. That's basically the jist of my poker story to date.

I'll get back to drug experiences and aha moment(s) after I answer some of the other questions. This post took a while!

I love living in Australia. There are a few places I would like to live in for 6 months or so (italy, new york and san fran come to mind, maybe also queenstown) but I would always want to come back to Aus. I've traveled a lot and I'm always happy to come home

I would never risk financial stability. I don't believe it is necessary to do so to "go for the nosebleeds". If you game select well and have strict stop losses that are within your bankroll management terms then there is no reason you should ever risk financial stability, even at nosebleeds. A good way to lower variance is to sell action / be staked or partially staked for those types of games.

My goal is to one day be able to comfortable enough to take shots on my own at nosebleeds and play 5/10 to 25/50 as my normal stakes (full stacked).

Sorry, no

I don't stake people anymore. I went through a phase a few years ago where I staked 20-30 people at all forms of poker and at the end of the day it just wasn't worth it.

I don't really monkey tilt. When I tilt it is more the type of tilting where I play long sessions when I know I shouldn't and don't quit when I am losing / playing bad / running bad. If something happens that would potentially put me on super monkey tilt I am pretty good at just getting up and leaving and not playing poker til I'm ready again (ie if I have a fight with my gf or find out bad news or something like that).

There have been some drunken sessions in my past where I probably monkey tilted and/or just spewed off stacks but I don't really count that as tilt, it's more like a mistake due to poor judgement and thinking by playing drunk. I'm not going to do that any more.

Tell us something you haven't seen or read before, something you've thought about, some kind of theory you've had maybe, that maybe isn't exactly about poker but relates to poker in some way in at least a peripheral sense. Maybe a thought you've had that isn't provable and/or might get you laughed at on these forums but since this is your well you won't.

To be fair, whenever I say 24-30 hour session, there's usually a short break or two in there. It's more like a 10 hour session, 1 hour break, 12 hour session, 30 minute break, 10 hour session.

I don't have a strict plan for what I eat but it's usually not much. The sessions never happen if I've had a huge meal since that makes me feel lethargic, and I try not to drink alcohol if I know I'm going to be playing soon.

I drink coffee to start alert but never more than 2-3 cups in a day. That is plenty to keep me alert without going overboard. Lately I've been drinking a lot of green tea though I'm yet to put in a tonne of hours while drinking it so I don't know how focused I would stay.

I'll sometimes watch TV while playing but am trying to cut down on this. Any TV watching usually happens at the beginning of a day/session since after that I try and stay focused. Music is almost always on. One of the biggest reasons I put in such long sessions is because the games are very good and I am playing really well - in which case I just don't watch TV and go into a sort of trance/zone state. An eccentric thing that I do when this happens is listen to the same song over and over and over on repeat for hours on end. It can be any song, I don't even have to love it, but it gets ingrained into my state of mind while grinding and helps keep me in the zone.

Rebecca Black's Friday was that song one day. My most recent long session was spent listening to Someone like You by Adele: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_Zs7XS3XUo

What keeps me from stopping is knowing I'm playing well and in great games. It's taken me almost 6 years to get here but I am finally starting to quit sessions when I am losing and playing bad and play super long when winning and the games are good.
