NEWBIE Live 1-2: K(Q8)9 flops top two

Venetian $1-2, $5 bring in

Reads: A few players just left the table, including a crazy Italian gambling guy, and two young males have just sat down UTG+3 and HJ. HJ in particular has the shades and earbuds, flings chips spastically, and looks like he's in Internet pro mode.

UTG+1 is a young Asian male who's been opening a lot of pots for $15 or $20 but, aside from some cbetting, isn't really that aggressive postflop.

Stacks:
UTG+1 $400
UTG+3 $800
HJ $600
Hero $500

Hero is button with KQ98

UTG limps for $5
UTG+1 raises to $20
Fold
UTG+3 calls $20
HJ calls $20
Hero calls $20

I realize that Maine-to-Spain hands aren't really that great but IP 100x deep it's hard to get myself in too much trouble, isn't it?

Fold, fold, fold
UTG calls $20

Flop ($103, stack=$480, SPR=4.8): 982
I have top two pair with no other significant redraw.

Check, check, check
HJ bets $100 -- not spastically this time, just moves out a stack.
Hero ???

i think flatting in position is in order here, correct?

raise-getting it in with only a dirty backdoor straight draw seems pretty bad...

I would like to flat but spr is only 2.5 so shipping may be the right play. Also that'll clear out the other players who may try to draw with some **** that might have like 20%, so getting them to fold is also good.
I'd say shipping isn't too bad as long as his stack off range isn't very tight.
I could be wrong though, interested in what teh regs have to say.

If you could come up with a stacking range & plug it into ppt that'd help immensely.

Flat and be prepared to fold when he barrels wet turns.

Fold Pre but now fold the flop imo.

The only turn that helps us is an 8/9 most other cards complete straights.

I don't think the call/re-eval line is great because when we flat we give odds to the remaining players in the hand to draw to better 2 pr, sets, flushes, straights etc.

Our hand is too vulnerable and can't stand much pressure. Players left to act could x/r and we would be in a rough spot.

Seems like a good way to light $100 on fire.

while i agree with this logic, seems kinda gross to just fold top 2...

if we were last to act and the other 2 players were between us (and had folded) instead of behind us, calling would be the right play here correct?

I think flatting is the way to go, it's hard for u to be a favorite here. You'll also get to see how he reacts to a flush card, etc, but the primary plan is to ship on a blank or near-blank, like a 5.

You still got like 380 left for the turn with position, this is a good spot to utilize it. Even though it's just a bit over a PSB, u can still play good poker.

Re: NEWBIE Live 1-2: K(Q8)9 flops top two

At the table i just folded, which felt pretty awful but is also part of being inexperienced at a game and not feeling like i had any reads. I can't imagine that shoving on a blank turn is bad, though, although there aren't many true blanks.

In general i don't think many $1-2 unknowns are barreling the turn here with draws. So how do we react if he pots, say, K on the turn?

That's one of ur best cards. If he's not clueless, he'll ship his entire range on a blank turn

Why do you think he wouldn't barrel turn with a draw?
