I thought quite a bit about whether or not I should check this back on the flop. Seems like a very good candidate to do so and as it played out is probably a very good reason for why betting can suck. I'd definitely do so vs a reg, especially if I knew him to be aggressive and/or x/r-happy.
In the end I still decided to bet vs a random fish because I found equally compelling reasons to do so: I don't expect to be x/r'd very much, I have a ton of equity + backdoor equity but very little SDvalue atm, I can make him call with dominated draws or weak pairs and make them fold or incorrectly payoff later.
Is that ok or would you still prefer xb in that situation especially since the board hit a l/c range quite well, too?

Cbetting has a lot of issues because it's not clear what you are getting to fold. A thinking player will fold low naked flush draws here because your iso range is nut heart heavy on this board, and obviously you want those hands to continue. Also, the stack sizes are such that you can check call good turns and have implied odds on the river.

As played turn is a fold. You don't even have the right equity if he has a straight, and there is a chance he boated.
