I agree but would add that as well as simply slowplaying to allow someone to catch up, checking to seem weak and (hopefully) induce bluffs is often the only way to get paid off (especially OP).
It always helps to know your opponents (and at least as importantly to know how they see you). Some will always attempt a position bet if they sense weakness (especially if checked to on the turn). Whereas others (a few) will fold to a bet but call because they suspect a bluff (some because your bet's too small; some because it was too large).
And then there was the player last night who two-bet shoved into my nuts on the river ... Ah, the micros.
