PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

Hey guys,

Thanks to all who watched the PCA live final table last night. I'm looking forward to hearing what you thought worked/didn't work and whether or not you believe that we (ESPN), should do something like this again.

I know that people have left comments in other threads, but I need a central place for all of this stuff so that I can keep track a little easier.

Appreciate all of you watching, but if you didn't, you can watch the replay of it on ESPN3 here: http://espn.go.com/espn3/index?id=120082

Thanks again for your thoughts and no matter what you say, good or bad, it won't be falling on deaf ears.

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

I thought the ESPN2 broadcast was great and really enjoyed watching it before I got too tired and went to bed (which is obviously an issue with starting the broadcast at 10 pm). I'm not the target audience but it was the most interesting poker on TV I think I've ever watched.

Daniel did a great job in the booth and I think James is a very solid play-by-play guy. Put someone who knows something about poker in the booth in all ESPN poker broadcasts, it would make them a lot better.

It could definitely use less of a Stars-infomercial feel to it, though -- less cutaways to pointless interviews with Stars pros, less Stars commercials and logos. They can promote the site without beating us over the head with it. But I suspect they bought the airtime and that's why it was like that.

ESPN3's unavailability in quite a few markets is quite annoying. I've never seen an ESPN3 poker broadcast, not at home (Cablevision or Verizon Wireless), not while staying at the Rio during the WSOP. And so, no, I and many others can't watch the replay of it on ESPN3.

It would be great if the scrolling ticker could be turned off during future events.

ESPN needs to create an all poker channel and get funding from it just like the PGA does. We want some more real televised tournamet poker & no more highlight shows . I would be willing to pay about $3.50 a month for this.

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

Regarding the unavailability of ESPN3, there should be a PPV option for people who don't get ESPN3. Like the WSOP ME live broadcast -- I used to pay a fair amount to watch that on PPV, this year I had no way to watch it (legally) even though I was willing to pay for it.

Love the broadcast, best poker on tv ever. Daniel Negreanu did a great job. I can't find a single thing bad. All poker should be televised like the PCA. Its clearly another time for a poker boom.

Re: espn3. I'm based in the UK, can I subscribe? And are there any archive poker streams on espn3 available to a subscriber? I want to watch the wsope last couple of tables again if poss.

Watched the 1st 3 hours engrossed last night. But had to go to bed so would like it started earlier (same as wsop me (i know there's nothing you can do )). Hartigan, v good. Negreanu, v enjoyable. The next 2 commentators, not so good (Tuchman and Brown). Not terrible just would rather have a pro there with some personality.

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

I thought the entire broadcast was great - from ESPN3.com to ESPN2 -- again, Daniel did a great job. A few feedback items --

1. Is it possible to see ALL of the hole cards preflop, even from the folded players? Probably difficult since it appeared there was lag for even the players who raised/called to show their hole cards.

2. Late start time -- why did this thing start at 5PM EST when the Bahamas is in EST? Didn't get to see the end since I went to bed around 1:30AM. They should have started the final table at 1PM.

Otherwise I thought it was great - I think this was the only other televised tournament that has shown every hand besides the tournament final table at Turning Stone that was shown on Fox Sports a few years ago -- hopefully this becomes more of the norm instead of the exception.

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

I missed the overal excitement of a final table though, but I guess that has to do with the security when doing live streaming, so you gotta give and take

I wonder how it is decided who does the commentary, james and daniel did amazing jobs, very interesting pokerwise and fun stories on the side, but chad brown was kinda boring to listen to

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

I think it would have been great if you guys got one or two internet players who were very familiar with the people at the table through their online MTT play. Would have been great to hear some personal insight about Oliver, Hall, and Sowers' play and how they would expect them to approach the FT.

It's cool and all to have Negreanu and Brown doing commentary (and they did a good job) but their complete lack of familiarity with any of the players at the table was a glaring void that could have been addressed.

Nonetheless the footage was great. Much improved from the WSOP stream. Keep up the great work and thanks!

I found it a little boring at times but the concept is pretty cool. The other thing that kinda had me on tilt was the camera angles. One seemed pretty far away from the table. all in all def a B+

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

I watched it on Pokerstars.tv since I'm not from the US and have to say that it was great to be able to see it online. Normally people from overseas are ****ed when it's only on ESPN.
1. Loved Daniel as a commentator, as well as Hartigan(he is always good).

2. Like Tuchman, but not so much Chad Brown, he just can't really talk.

3. Missing some excitement, but that's probably the price you pay with the almost live coverage and I think we all can live with that.

4. TY no Hellmuth.

In general great job, hoping to see this kind of coverage a little more in the future.

I watch it on http://www.cosasdepoker.com/ and it was pretty well. Now I'm also seeing The Bounty Shootout on the same webpage.

Best stream I've seen by far. Like I said in the other thread, I felt there was a lack in atmposphere compared to previous years, but I'm really nit-picking. Would love to see this sort of thing again.

Thought it was fantastic. Great for the game as it did a good job of introducing the thought process that makes poker interesting. More broadcasts like this could really inject some new life into televised poker. DN is really great in this format and lol at all the people asking if DW was wearing a wig.

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

What I liked: Daniel's commentary, showing every hand and showing the hole cards. As a poker fan, seeing a whole final table with all the hole cards and expert analysis by one of the game's greats was definitely a treat. I've been getting tired of the typical WSOP coverage that just mostly shows coin flips. And I did watch the WSOP final table live on ESPN3 but without the hole cards and with that tournament being run so slow, the commentators mostly talked to themselves and didn't really comment on the game so much.

I would've liked some quick recaps during the broadcast of what had taken place so far. I tuned out when they got to heads up and when I tuned back in 45 min or so later the other guy was a big chip lead and the commentators kept talking about the "two hands" that had changed the chip lead and they kept mentioning it but never really elaborated or showed a replay.

I understand it may not be possible to do too much of that stuff when you're doing live commentary on an event that isn't setup with breaks for TV (like most pro sports today) but it would've greatly helped for the viewers that tuned in late to this multi-hour long match to get a little bit of recap and some replays of the critical hands.

Anyway, kudos to whomever came up with this idea. It may not be the most mainstream thing (I doubt it was a coincidence they aired it during NFL playoff time) but it was great for poker fans.

Edit: Was David Williams doing commentary in the place of Negraneau earlier in the broadcast? I didn't tune in until they were about 5 handed.

LOVED everything about it.

THANK you. This is what poker fans have been waiting for. PLEASE of these in the future. I understand that, economically speaking, Stars couldn't foot the bill for stating this broadcast at 5 or so. That's the only complaint... too late into the night (at least for the EST time zone).

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

Really liked it Andrew, watched the entire broadcast (it ended just in time) and couldn't have asked for more. I watched it all on ESPN3, so I can't speak for the TV broadcast.

Didn't care much for Chad Brown's commentary, it just felt too flat and his voice didn't really seem national ESPN level (kind of like Dennis Phillips) and without knowing who he was I had trouble trusting his analysis.

Please have someone do something about the on-mike sneezing... I think there were four or five sneezes from James and Daniel. That aside, they really did a great job keeping the conversation flowing, especially during some of the lengthy tanking in some of the hands. I'm used to hearing Hartigan and others cover streaming live events, and
he and Daniel did a great job staying on topic. As much as I missed discussion of movies and other filler, I appreciate the professionalism required for a national televised live sporting event.

Any chance we'll hear updates on ratings? I hope they did well, I was worried that the tournament was going to end with Hall's straight v Oliver's FH, less than two hours after the TV broadcast started...

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

I watched this in its entirety on ESPN3 as my cable company has just recently added that option.

The coverage was excellent and as mentioned above, Daniel did a great job of commentary. He is currently an excellent bridge between the old guard and newer internet wave of poker players.

I will agree with the poster above that I would like to see all the hole cards displayed, including those hands that are folded. There is both informational and entertainment value provided in doing so for the viewer. Also, the equity percentage in hand match-ups would be more accurate due to the possibility of discounting outs that have been mucked earlier in a given hand.

Overall, a great job and I was very grateful to be able to watch this live (with a necessary one hour delay). Thank you once again for providing this. This is what poker coverage has to be for those serious about the game...not some over-simplified and glorified hi-lite reel.

Re: PCA Feedback Wanted for ESPN

I really enjoyed the TV broadcast. I wasn't home to start early on ESPN3, but I did love the ESPN3 coverage of the WSOP Main Event.

The feel of both broadcasts are so much more 'real' for lack of a better word. The time of decisions, the flow, are much different from the 2 hour clip shows.

I enjoyed Daniel and James' commentary.

At the beginning of the TV broadcast and one other time the graphics were off and too big for the screen. I've seen that happen on WSOP broadcasts as well. After 10 minutes or so it shifted and was fine. I don't know if that has to do with ESPN or the sattalite company, but I think I remember it happening when I had cable too.
