The definition of pro is "following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain"
Since he is playing and is able to support himself and his wife's life style that by defenition makes him a pro.
You don't need to make millions of dollars and be on TV to be a pro. If your lifestyle is only $20k / year and you make $25k/ year in poker you are a pro by defention. If you make 100k a year of playing poker but your lifestyle requires $150 or 200k/ year than you are not a professional poker player as you use other income to supplement your lifestyle. That is why the Millionares playing are not "professional" they might win hundreds of thousands or even a million a year but they still need their original source of income to live the life style they want.
So if you make $300/week playing poker you could consider yourself a professional if the region you are playing at $300/week allows you to survive and live the life you want without any additional income.
Poker Bustouts is a good documentary on not well known professional poker players. Some grind 1/2 some grind 2/5
